Historical Description

WOULDHAM is a village and parish, on the east bank of the navigable Medway, opposite Hailing, which is reached by a ferry, 2 miles north from Snodland station, on the North Kent line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 4 south from Rochester, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Larkfield hundred, Mailing petty sessional division and union, county court district of Rochester, rural deanery of Cobham and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. A small portion of the parish is within the borough of Rochester. The church of All Saints is of flint and stone, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower containing 6 bells and a clock, chiming the quarters, and provided in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee in 1897 of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: the church was restored and re-seated in 1885, at a cost of £2,330: there are 264 sittings. In the churchyard is a tombstone to Walter Burke esq. of this parish, who died 12 Sept. 1815; he was purser of the “Victory” at the battle of Trafalgar, 21 Oct. 1805, and in his arms Lord Nelson died. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £230, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Robert William Taylor M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The Jubilee Hall, an iron structure, was erected in 1887 by Henry Peters esq. and is lent by him for different purposes; it will hold 150 persons. The Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1867, is an edifice of brick, seating 250 persons. Henry Peters esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,532 acres, 34 of tidal water and 27 of foreshore; rateable value, £8,244; the population in 1891 was 1,373, and in 1901, 1,272.
