Historical Description

The village of Wrotham, ten miles from Maidstone, is situated at the foot of a great ridge of Chalk Hills. From Wrotham Hill, which is partly clothed with fine beech trees, there is a beautiful prospect southward, over a great extent and variety of country, lying in the vale beneath. The Archbishops of Canterbury had formerly a palace here, of which there are at present scarce any remains.

This was formerly a market town, but the market, which was held on Tuesdays, has been long disused; there is, however, a yearly fair on the day mentioned in our list.

Some antiquaries have conjectured Wrotham to have been the station called in Antoninus's Itinerary, Vagniacce; and it is probable that a Roman military way passed by Offham, through this parish, westward towards Oldborough and Stone Street.

Between seventy and eighty years ago a considerable quantity of British silver coin was discovered in this parish, by a mole's casting up the earth, and by digging afterwards, which were all seized by the lord of the manor.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WROTHAM is a town and parish, at the foot of the chalk hills, on the road from London to Maidstone, with a station 1 mile south on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 24 miles by road from London, 10 north-west from Maidstone, and 8 north-east from Sevenoaks. It is in the Mid division of the county, hundred of its own name, lathe of Aylesford, petty sessional division and union of Mailing, county court district of Sevenoaks, and in the rural deanery of Shoreham, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The “Local Government Act, 1858” (21 and 22 Vict. c. 98) was adopted by the parish May 26, 1863, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), the town is now governed by an Urban District Council of 13 members, and is divided into three wards, viz.: Wrotham, Plaxtole and Platt. The parish is lighted with gas by a company, established in 1885. This place, which is of very remote antiquity, is supposed to have been a British settlement, various discoveries having been made of British coins and fragments of brass armour and military weapons. A palace of the Archbishops of Canterbury formerly stood here, adjacent to the church, of which the terrace and a few offices alone remain.

Wrotham Hill, just above the town, affords a fine prospect. On Terry’s Lodge farm is a hill 770 feet above the level of the sea, and perhaps the highest land in the county. The church of St. George is of stone, chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower of Perpendicular work, containing a clock and 8 bells: there are 12 stained windows, an ancient tomb, supposed to be that of William of Wrotham, governor of Dover Castle, temp. Henry II. and several brasses with effigies: the church affords 420 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living comprises a rectory and a vicarage, net yearly value £700, with residence and 26 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Walter Henry Trelawney Ashton-Gwatkin M.A. of King’s College, Cambridge, and surrogate. There is an almshouse for four parishioners, endowed by Mistress Helen Betenson with an allowance of 4s. each weekly. Wrotham Hill Park, the property of Sir Sydney Hedley Waterlow bart. is occupied by Samuel Mandeville Phillips esq. Sir William Nevill Montgomerie Geary bart. of Oxon Hoath Tonbridge, William Marshall Cazalet esq. of Fairlawn, Tonbridge, Sir Mark Wilks Collet bart. of St. Clere, Kemsing, Sevenoaks, and Frank William Monckton esq. of The Warren, Ightham, are the principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, chiefly sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops, the hop plantations average being between 700 and 800 acres; there are also 9 acres of water in the parish; total area of the civil parish, 8,874 acres of land this includes Plaxtole, Platt and Woodlands; rateable value, £18,063; the population of the civil parish and Urban District in 1901 was 3,571, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,546.

The population of the Wards in 1901 was:-Wrotham, 1,605; Platt, 952; Plaxtole, 1,104.

BOROUGH GREEN, 1 ½ miles south on the road from Sevenoaks to Maidstone, and Nepicar, 1 mile south-east, are partly in this parish.
