Historical Description

YALDING is a parish, 6 miles long and 3 ½ to 4 miles wide, and includes the ecclesiastical district of Collier Street, and several hamlets; it is situated at the confluence of the Beult and Teise with the navigable Medway, 7 miles south-west from Maidstone, 8 north-east from Tonbridge and 39 from London; a branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway skirts the parish between Tonbridge and Maidstone, and has a station about a mile west from the village; it is in the South Western division of the county, Brenchley and Horsmonden and Twyford hundreds, lathe of Aylesford, petty sessional division of Mailing, Maidstone union and county court district, rural deanery of North Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient cruciform building of stone in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there are two tombs and monuments to the Ward and Akers families and several stained windows: the church affords about 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558, and there are several ancient books in a good state of preservation in the parish Chest. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £1,000, including 23 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Miss Fletcher, and held since 1896 by the Rev. John Rowland Leigh M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford; the vicarage house is picturesquely situated, and is entirely surrounded by an ancient mote. The Brethren hold services in a room at Benover. A sum of £125, derived from bequests left at different periods, is distributed in charitable and educational purposes. Kenward, a fine mansion, is the seat of Charles E. Fletcher esq. and has grounds of 48 acres. Capt. Edwin Berkeley Cook, of Roydon Hall, is lord of the manor; and the representatives of the late Lady Frances Fletcher, the Rt. Hon. Thomas Frederick Halsey P.C., M.P. of Hemel Hempstead, H. T. Manwaring esq. the Rev. C. W. Shepherd M.A. rector of Trottiscliffe, the trustees of the late J. R. Mills, the Earl of Strafford and R. Norton esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is of various kinds; subsoil, stone, gravel and clay. This is the largest hop growing parish in Kent and in England, upwards of 1,400 acres being annually cultivated in this parish; fruit is also grown in abundance. The area is 6,302 acres of land and 56 of water; rateable value, £18,038; the population in 1901 was 2,523, of which 1,555 are attached to the parish church.

By Local Government Board Order 21,673, dated March 24, 1888, Old Hay Farm was transferred from Mereworth and Lillie Hoe from Wateringbury to Yalding, and by Order 20,932 of the same date, Keylands and Paddock Wood were added from Nettlestead to the civil parish.

Benover and Congelow ½ mile south-east, Laddingford 1 mile south-west, and Fowl Hall 3 miles south are hamlets.

Schools

Free Grammar, founded & endowed in 1665 by William Cleave esq. a citizen of London, who resided at Yalding during the plague & founded the school as a thank offering for his escape from sickness; it was reconstituted in 1874 by the Endowed School Commissioners, & is situated at the upper end of the village, on a comparatively high ground; the master is allowed to take a limited number of boarders.

National (boys), Yalding, built in 1873, for 160 children: average attendance, 98; (girls & infants) built in 1856, for 180 children; average attendance, 87 girls & 50 infants.
