Historical Description
BLEASDALE, or Admarsh-in-Bleasdale, is a township of scattered houses, and a parochial chapelry, in Lancaster civil parish, 12 miles south-south-east from Lancaster, 13 north from Preston and 5 north-by-east from Garstang and Catterall station on the Lancaster and Preston section of the London and North Western railway, in the Lancaster division of the county, hundred of Amounderness, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Garstang, rural deanery of Garstang, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester: portions of the parish were, by Order in Council, dated March 4, 1864, assigned to the consolidated chapelry of Calder Vale. It was formerly an ancient royal forest, attached to the Duchy of Lancaster, the limits of which were coterminous with the township: of this area about 3,000 acres are inclosed and the remainder are wild moors or fells, covered with heather, stocked with grouse and depastured by flocks of small black-faced sheep like those in the mountainous districts of Wales. The right of depasturing was purchased in 1880 by the landowners. The rivers Brock and Calder, as also the smaller stream of Grizedale Beck, have been for some time appropriated as a water supply to the towns of Kirkham, Lytham, Blackpool and Fleetwood, situated in the low-lying district of the Fylde: the control of this water supply is now in the hands of the Joint Authorities Water Board: the water is particularly pure and soft, and the springs never-failing.
The church of St. Eadnor, rebuilt about 1837, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one boll: the east window is stained: the font is a memorial to the Rev. William Fenton, a former incumbent, who died in 1836: the church was restored and a new chancel built in 1897, in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1813. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £180, with residence and 24 statute acres of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of Lancaster, and held since 1891 by the Rev. John Frederick Highway Parker, of Queen’s College, Birmingham. A Sunday school is held in the school-room. The charities, including Parkinson’s Charity, left in 1702, amount to £72 annually, including the endowment of the National school, which is £22. The children of the poor are admitted free to the school, and the remainder of the charity funds is distributed annually in sums varying from 10s. to 30s. each, on the 17th April. Butter and cheese form the staple trade of the district. Bleasdale Tower, the property of William Garnett esq. is leased by Samuel Lees esq. of Parkbridge, Ashton-under-Lyne, and others. There is no lord of the manor. The chief landed proprietor is William Garnett esq. of Quernmore Park, Lancaster. The soil is a peaty moss, applied chiefly to pasture; subsoil, clay. The area is 7,288 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £4,123; the population of the civil parish in 1901 was 403, including 8 officials and 124 boys in the North Lancashire Reformatory for Boys, and 284 in the ecclesiastical parish.
North Lancashire Reformatory, founded in 1857 by the late William James Garnett esq. built by subscription, is supported by a capitation grant from the Treasury & by contributions from the counties & boroughs from which boys are committed; the school is certified by the Secretary of State for the Home Department for 125 boys; a farm of 200 acres is connected with the institution, on which the boys are chiefly employed; the trades taught are tailoring, shoe making &c.; boys are also employed at neighbouring cotton & paper mills; on 30th June, 1904, there were in the school 125 boys; on license, 97: under 3 years’ supervision, 160.
