Historical Description
ASPULL is a township and village in the parish of Wigan and together with Haigh was formed into a parish April 3, 1838, and is on the Union canal from Liverpool to Hull, 2 ½ miles north-east from Wigan railway station, 16 west-by-north from Manchester, in the luce division of the county, hundred of Salford, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wigan, rural deanery of Wigan, archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool. Aspull townsli p was governed by a Local Board, formed in 1878, but under the “Local Government Act, 1894,” it is now governed by an Urban District Council. The church of St. John the Baptist, at New Springs, a chapel of ease to St. David’s, Haigh, and erected in the year 1871 by the late Earl of Crawford and Bilcarres, was entirely rebuilt in 1897, and is now a structure of red brick, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, and a north-west porch, and will seat 520 persons. The register dates from 1873. The Rev. Harry Sydney Radclifte M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, has been curate in charge since 1894, and resides at Haigh. Here are two Catholic churches, erected in 1858, and dedicated to Our Lady of the immaculate Conception, and the Holy Family, and there are also Wesleyan, independent Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Wigan. Coal and iron Co. Limited and other firms have very extensive and valuable coal and cannel mines in this township; there are also large malt kilns and a cotton mill. The Earl of Crawford K.T. who is lord of the manor, and Boger Leigh esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. The area is 1,906 acres, of which 23 are water; rateable value, £24,300; the population in 1901 was 8,388 in the civil township and Urban District.
