Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
AUGHTON is a township and parish in the Ormskirk division of the county, West Derby hundred, Ormskirk petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Ormskirk, archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool, 10 ¾ miles north-east from Liverpool and 2 ½ south of Ormskirk. Town Green station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway is in this parish. The church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly of the 16th century, with a north aisle of later date, a large portion of the south wall of the nave dating from the 12th century: the church consists of chancel with chapel, nave of four bays, north aisle and a tower with spire at the north-east angle of the nave containing 4 bells and a clock, erected in 1884 to commemorate the incumbency of the Rev. W. H. Boulton M.A.: an organ was presented in 1858 by the late Thomas Bland: a carved oak lectern was placed in the church in 1886 in memory of the Rev. W. H. Boulton, and a handsomely carved oak pulpit was presented in 1886 by Mrs. Bland in memory of her husband: there is a monument by Westmacott, with carvings in low relief, to the Rev. George Vanbrugh, late rector, who died in 1847; and brasses to Katherine Horrocks (1710) and Richard Mosock (1686), whose ancestors, according to the inscription, had been interred here for 380 years: there are also a number of mural tablets: choir stalls of oak were presented in 1900 by Mrs. Seddon, of West Tower, in memory of the late Robert Seddon: the stained east window was erected in 1900 in memory of Mrs. Bland: the chancel was rebuilt in 1875: there axe 500 sittings.
The register of baptisms dates from 1541, and of marriages and burials from the year 1540; these records are in excellent preservation. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £540, with 47 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sir Tristram T. Tempest bart. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Roger Francis Markham M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Christ Church, erected in 1867—70 as a chapel of ease to St. Michael’s, and consecrated May 4, 1877, is a building of stone in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, organ chamber, south porch and a western tower with crocketed pinnacles 120 feet high, containing 8 bells, oast in 1878, and presented by various donors: the east window was given by Mrs. Bland, of Holt Green, Aughton, in memory of her father-in-law, Thomas Bland, d. 1865; and the west window was presented in the year 1878 by Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Swindells, as a memorial to their parents: four other memorial windows in the tower were given by William Neale esq. in the year 1878, and there are some in the nave: the chancel is fitted with oak stalls, and has a reredos of Caen stone, marble and alabaster: a new organ, by Abbott and Smith, of Leeds, was added in 1893 by subscription: there are sittings for 590 persons. The register totes from 1877. There is also a Mission church in Cottage lane. The Rev. George Vanbrugh, a former rector of this parish, in 1847 bequeathed property for the erection and endowment of 7 almshouses. St. Anne’s Catholic church, built in 1852, is of stone in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, Lady chapel and a tower containing one bell: the east window, and one in the Lady chapel and one in the baptistery are stained: there is a bast, by Gibson, to the late John Rosson esq. of Moor Hall: there are 850 sittings. St. Mary’s Catholic chapel, near the southern extremity of the parish, will seat 300 persons. There is a Baptist chapel in Long lane, erected in 1886, with 150 sittings. Sir Tristram Tempest bart. of Tong Hall, Bradford, Yorks, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light sand subsoil, sand, with clay in places. The chief crops are market produce. The area is 4,610 acres; rateable value, £30,859; the population in 1891 was 3,456 and in 1901, 3,517.
