Historical Description
BARDSLEY, originally in the Knott Lanes division of the parish of Ashton-under-Lyne, is a township, formed under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” in the Prestwich division of the county, union, county court district and petty sessional division of Ashton-under-Lyne, hundred of Salford, rural deanery of Ashton-under-Lyne and archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester, and is situated between Oldham and Ashton, being about 2 miles from each town and governed by the rural district council of Limehurst. Bardsley contains an increasing population employed in the coal mines, cotton factories and iron works of the neighbourhood. The Park Bridge station, on the Oldham, Ashton and Guide Bridge railway, is about a mile distant, but the stations at Ashton-under-Lyne and Oldham on the London and North Western Railway are the most convenient. The ecclesiastical district, containing the two small villages of Waterhouses and Woodhouses, was formed in 1844.
The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1844 at a cost of £3,000, is an edifice in the Norman style, standing north and south, and consisting of chancel, nave, east and west transepts, south porch and a tower at the south end with pinnacles and containing one bell: there are memorial windows to the Rev. A. H. Hulton B.A. Jonah Harrop esq. D.L. and Samuel Lees esq. late of Park Bridge, and one placed by Miss Harrop Lees to her father, Samuel D. Lees M.D., J.P. her mother and brother: in 1885 the chancel was enlarged, an organ chamber built and choir stalls fitted at a cost of £960: in 1896 a marble pulpit was presented by M. E. Shaw esq. in memory of his parents: there are 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, with residence, in the gift of Hulme’s trustees, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Lewis Robbs M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. The vicarage house was erected in 1847 at a cost of £1,000. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. Adjoining Bardsley House, and in front of Bardsley Cottage, stands a large oak, now (1904) and for some years past in a state of decay, the trunk of which, at two feet from the ground, measures 16 feet 4 inches in circumference. Dean Shutt, now a farmhouse, is an ancient mansion, erected in 1611 by the Sandiford family. The Countess of Stamford and Warrington, who is lady of the manor, Hulme’s trustees and William Edward Montagu Hulton-Harrop esq. of Lythewood Hall, near Shrewsbury, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are pasture. The area is 862 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £7,643; the population in 1901 was 2,194 in the civil and 3,748 in the ecclesiastical parish.
