Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
BICKERSTAFFE is a parish, formed in 1843 from the parish of Ormskirk, about 3 miles south-east from Ormskirk, in the Ormskirk division of the county, petty sessional division, hundred of West Derby, union and county court district of Ormskirk, rural deanery of Ormskirk, and archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool; the nearest railway stations are Ormskirk, Rainford Junction and Skelmersdale. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1848, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a western tower with spire, containing 2 belle and a clock: in the chancel are four stained windows, three of these being respectively memorials to T. Abraham esq. 1847; H. Foster esq. 1863; and to two of the children of the Rev. Canon Penrhyn, 1863; the fourth was erected by public subscription in 1867: the organ was introduced in 1879, the cost being defrayed by the 14th Earl of Derby K.G. and the parishioners: in 1886 the chancel was raised in three stages; in 1895—6 a vestry and organ chamber were built, considerable external repairs executed, and the internal roof ceiled at a total cost of about £1,200: the interior was entirely redecorated in 1899: there are 513 sittings, of which about 200 are free. The register dates from the year 1843. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, in the gift of the Earl of Derby K.G., P.C., G.C.B. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Wm. Wright M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. There are two mission rooms in connection with this church, one at Scarth Hill and the other in Skelmersdale road. Watkinson’s charity of £1 16s. is yearly distributed in bread. Peter Lathom’s charity of about £76 is also distributed to the poor. Here is an extensive colliery. The Earl of Derby K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor and owner of the land. The soil is sand and clay, with portion of moss land subsoil, clay, gravel and moss. The chief crops are barley, wheat, oats and potatoes. The area is 6,442 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £17,381; the population in 1901 was 2,096.
