Historical Description

BIRTLE-CUM-BAMFORD formerly a township of the old parish of Middleton, has been, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” formed into a civil parish, and comprises the ecclesiastical parishes of Ashworth (which see), Birtle and Bamford: it is in the Heywood division of the county, petty sessional division of Bury, hundred of Salford, Bury union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Bury and archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester.

BIRTLE (or Bircle) is an ecclesiastical parish consisting of part of the townships of Heap, Birtle-cum-Bamford and Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth, in the parish of Middleton, was formed April 28, 1848, and is 2 miles north-east from Bury and 3 north-west of Heywood station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway. The church of St John the Baptist, erected in 1845—6, and consecrated July, 1846, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, with one bell: the stained east window was the gift of the late John Bowker esq. of Prestwich, who also gave the site: there are several memorial windows and the church affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1846. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £212, in the gift of the rector of Middleton, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Edward Renshaw M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and United Methodist chapels. The Earl of Derby K.G., G.C.B., P.O. who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Thomas Wrigley esq. (d. 1880) are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, stone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 2,393 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £7,925; the population in 1901 was 1,447; the population of the ecclesiastical parish of Birtle, St. John the Baptist, in 1901 was 2,118, mostly engaged in bleaching, dyeing and paper making and small pasture farms.

Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882, ’’ a detached part of Walmersley, known as Cob House Farm, and a part of Heap parish known as Shuttleworth and Diggles, have been transferred to Birtle.

Public Elementary School, erected in 1873, at a cost of £1,200, on a site given by the Earl of Derby K.G.: the school was enlarged in 1903 to accommodate 296 children; average attendance, 145.

BAMFORD is an ecclesiastical parish, in the rural deanery of Bury and archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester, and was formed March 8th, 1881, from the parishes of Birtle and St. Luke and St. James, Heywood, and is 1 ½ miles from Birtle church and 2 ½ west from Rochdale. The church of St. Michael, erected in 1885, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and a turret containing one bell: there are 502 sittings. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £209, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Frederick Cawood Dearden M.A., L.Th. of University College, Durham. There are Congregational, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The extensive woollen factory, of Messrs. S. Porrltt and Sons is in this hamlet; also a large cotton factory. Population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 1,717.
