Historical Description
BISPHAM (Bispham with Norbreck), mentioned in Domesday Book as “Bisoopham,” is a township, village and parish with a station on the Preston and Wyre branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire and London and North Western railway, 1 ½ miles south from the village, 6 miles south from Fleetwood, 3 north from Blackpool, in the Blackpool division of the county, petty sessional division of Kirkham, Amounderness hundred, Fylde union, Blackpool county court district, Fylde rural deanery, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester, pleasantly situated on the cliffs of the Irish Sea. The parish is governed by an Urban District Council of nine members, formed April 1, 1903, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894.” The ecclesiastical parish extends about 3 miles from north to south, and about 1 mile broad. The church of All Hallows, rebuilt in 1880—3 on the site of the former structure, at a cost of £4,000, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, from designs by Mr. John Lowe, architect, of Manchester, and consists of chancel, nave, organ chamber, vestry, south porch and a western tower with pinnacles containing one bell: the entrance doorway, which formed part of the ancient church, erected about 1140, is ornamented with zigzag work and the signs of the zodiac: in the church are several brasses, dated 1718, 1723 and 1748, to the Veale family, of Whinney Heys, and another of 1704: the stained east window was presented by J. B. Dickson esq. of Preston, in memory of his wife and daughter, and there are other memorial windows to F. Kemp esq. J.P. and Miss Simpson, and a stained window at the west end, presented by the Freemasons of the Fylde: an organ was built in 1889, chiefly at the cost of Mrs. Sykes, of the Knowle and Mrs. Elliott, of ivy cottage: the eagle lectern of oak was the gift in 1883 of the Orange lodges of the district: and the stone pulpit was presented in the same year by Edward Burton esq. of Eaves Hall, Clitheroe; the communion cloth was worked and simultaneously given by Mrs. Holmes, of Preston, sister of the Rev. Fras. Jn. Dickson M.A. late rector: the communion plate dates from 1608: there are sittings for 320 persons. The registers date from the year 1599 and are in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with 3 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of C. H. Bibby-Hesketh esq. of Southport, and held since 1885 by the Rev. George Leighton M.A. of University College, Durham. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. On the coast are several residences. The land belongs to various owners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The area is 1,341 acres of land, 5 of water and 473 of foreshore; rateable value, £14,528; the population in 1901 was 985.
LITTLE BISPHAM stands on the coast, within half a mile.
By Local Government Board Order 14,712, which came into operation March 25, 1883, Bispham Hawes, a detached part of Bispham, was transferred to Layton with Warbreck, and by Order 6,910, November 24, 1877, a part of Carleton, known as Horseman’s Hill, was added to Bispham.
Elementary Schools (mixed), Bispham, endowed in 1659 by Richard Higginson with 36 acres of land, which has been sold & the money invested in Consols; out of the interest £40 is applied in providing scholarships, of not more than £5 each, to encourage scholars to remain at the school; in providing exhibitions, not exceeding £20 each, tenable at some place of higher education; & in paying the salaries of the master & mistress; the school will hold 255 children; average attendance, 180.
