Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
BLAWITH is a township and ecclesiastical parish in the civil parish of Ulverston, from which town it is 8 miles north, and 4 south from Torver station on the Furness railway, pleasantly seated in the valley, near Coniston Lake, in the North Lonsdale division of the county, petty sessional division of North Lonsdale, hundred of Lonsdale (north of the sands), union, county court district and rural deanery of Ulverston, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. John the Baptist, erected in 1880, is a small edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a turret on the western gable containing 2 bells: the chancel and its stained windows were erected as a memorial to the late Rev. Richard Harrison M.A.; the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. John Bolland M.A.; there are sittings for 169 persons: a short distance from the present structure are the ruins of the old chapel, erected about 1560. The register of baptisms dates from 1728: marriages, 1730; and burials, 1746. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £180, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Buccleueh K.G., K.T. and held since 1878 by the Rev. John Ashburner, of St. Bees. The Duke of Buccleuch K.G., K.T. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Gilbert H. W. Harrison esq. of Manxview, Seascale, and Major Harrison. The soil is gravel; subsoil, slate and stone. The land is used for pasturage. The area is 2,845 acres of land and 153 of water; rateable value, £1,238; the population in the township in 1901 was 145.
Public Elementary School (mixed), rebuilt in 1859, for 60 children; average attendance, 25; the school is endowed with the interest of £160, left in 1772 & 1777 by Margaret & William Lancaster: £50 left in 1831 by Mrs. Mary Bedhead, & on a bequest of £21 from Mrs. Sherwin in 1871; this is applied to the augmentation of the mistress’s salary.
The Furness Railway Company’s steam gondola plies during the summer months, 4 times daily, from Monk Coniston, stopping, to land opposite the Lake Bank hotel.
