Historical Description
BRIERCLIFFE is a township and parish, formed out of the ancient parish of Whalley, 3 miles north-east from Burnley railway station, in the Clitheroe division of the county, petty sessional division of Burnley, higher division of Blackburn hundred, Burnley union and county court district, rural deanery of Burnley, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. The church of St. James, erected in 1840, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, west porch and a western turret with spire containing one bell: the east window is a memorial to the Rev. J. McLindon, first incumbent, d. 1851, and there are others erected by the late W. Robinson J.P. of Reedley Bank and by the Rev. W. S. Hoole, sometime vicar, in memory of their children: in 1881 the chancel was raised and decorated, and the whole church re-seated, and in 1888 the burial ground was enlarged at a cost of £450: the church has 515 sittings. The register dates from the year 1841. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £288, with residence, in the gift of the Hulme trustees, and held since 1894 by the Rev. William Stabb Matthews B.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel at Hill lane, a Scotch Baptist at Haggate, and one for independent Methodists. In the township are stone quarries and cotton weaving factories. The Duke of Buccleuch K. G., K.T. is lord of the manor. Thomas Townley Townley-Parker esq. J.P., D.L. of Cuerdon Hall, Preston, and the trustees of the late John Hargreaves esq. (d. 1895) being the chief landowners. The soil is clay; the subsoil is clay and slate. The land is entirely in pasture. The area of the township is 4,120 acres of land and 20 of water: rateable value, £10,695; the population in 1901 was 2,324. The area of the district of St. James, Briercliffe, which includes a portion of Burnley extra-municipal township, is 3,300 acres, and the population in 1901 was 2,986.
Public Elementary School, erected in 1882, & enlarged in 1902, for 450 children; average attendance, 320.
