Historical Description

BRINDLE is a village, township and parish, 5 miles north from, Chorley, 6 south-east from Preston and 6 south-west from Blackburn, in the Chorley division of the county, hundred of Leyland, petty sessional division of Leyland hundred, Chorley anion and county court district, rural deanery of Leyland, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester, and is supposed once to have formed part of the parish of Leyland. The East Lancashire section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway runs through the parish and has a station at Hoghton, about 2 ¼ miles north from the centre of the village: the Leeds and Liverpool canal passes on the south-east and western sides of the parish. The church of St. James is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the stained east window, erected in 1878, is a memorial to the Rev. Thomas Lund, rector, d. 1877: the body of the church was rebuilt in 1817 and the restoration completed in 1869: in 1888 the church was again restored, at a total cost of £337, and in 1896 the tower was restored and the bells rehung at a cost of £225: the church will seat 525 persons. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a discharged rectory, net yearly value £350, with 8 ½ acres of glebe, 12 houses, and residence, in the gift of the Duke of Devonshire K.G. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Kinton Jacques M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, rural dean of Leyland, hon. canon of Manchester, and surrogate. The Catholic chapel of St. Joseph, near Brindle Lodge, was erected in 1786, and seats 800. The poor have the benefit of interest derived from £1,300 Consols, arising from sale of Shuttingfield's estate; Blackledge’s charity produces £8 16s. which sum is applied partly in purchasing books, the remainder being distributed. Here are excellent stone quarries, chemical works and a cotton manufactory. The principal mansions are Brinille Lodge, the seat of Thomas Whitehead esq. and Crabtree House, the residence of Mrs. Butterworth. Lord Chesham P.C., K.C.B. is lord of the manor and chief landowner; Sir James de Hoghton bart. of Hoghton Tower, Preston: Thomas Whitehead esq. of Brindle Lodge, and Mrs. Lees, of Thurland Castle, and there are a few small owners. The soil is clay and sand subsoil, various. The chief crops are grass and potatoes. The acreage of the parish is-3,106, of which 11 are water: rateable value, £9,580; the population in 1901 was 1,026.

Post & Postal Order Office.-Henry Hatch, sub-postmaster. Letters from Chorley at 7.45 a.m.; dispatched at 5.45 p.m. Sundays arrive at 9 a.m. & dispatched 10 a.m. The nearest money order office is at Clayton Green & the nearest telegraph office at Gregson lane, 2 miles distant.

PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

St. James (mixed), built in 1828, for 120 children; average attendance, 77; & supported in part by an annual grant of £15 from the Charity Trustees.

Catholic (mixed), erected in 1831 by the late Mr. Joseph Knight, of Chelsea, for 250 children; average attendance, 142.
