Historical Description

BROUGHTON is a township and parish on the road from Preston to Lancaster, 3 ½ miles north from Preston, and 2 from Broughton and Barton and Broughton station on the Lancaster and Carlisle and West Yorkshire section of the London and North Western railway; the ecclesiastical parish was formed, April 5, 1878, under Lord Blandford’s Act (19 and 20 Vict. c. 104), out of Preston; it is in the Blackpool division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Amounderness, union, county court district of Preston, rural deansry of Preston, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The township is watered by the Blundell brook, and supplied with gas and electricity from Preston. The church of St. John the Baptist, originally Norman, and dating from, the year 1100, is a plain edifice of stone, rebuilt in 1826, from the designs of the late Thomas Rickman F.S.A, and consisting of nave and an embattled western tower, dated 1533, and containing a clock and 6 bells, recast by subscription in 1884—5, at a cost of £535; at the east end were a chancel and two chapels, now incorporated with the nave: the ancient font was restored in 1800 by Mr. Richard Hardman: in the vestry is an ancient oak chest, also holy water stoup. The register dates from the year 1612. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £182, including 9 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Samuel Edward Collinson L.Th. of Durham University. The Catholic chapel at Fernyhalgh, dedicated to St. Mary, built in 1836, is a plain edifice of brick, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles: there are two stained windows: the sanctuary was decorated in 1840: the chapel affords 800 sittings. Broughton House, the residence of Edward Wilson esq. is a brick building, surrounded by well laid-out grounds. Brooklands, a stone mansion, is the residence of Arthur Westworth esq. and Priors Lea, of Benjamin Sykes esq. There are no manorial rights. The chief landowners in the township of Broughton are E. R. Rothwell esq. of Sharpies Hall, Bolton; James Clarke, T. Knowles and Edward Wilson esqrs. the trustees of the late Paul Fleetwood esq. and the trustees of Kirkham school. The soil is clayey; subsoil, various; the land is entirely in pasture. The acreage of the township is 2,357; rateable value, £10,950; the population in 1901 was 616; of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,018.

PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Endowed, founded by L. Stadaugh in the reign of Henry VIII., the endowment now producing £120 a year; the school buildings were rebuilt in 1846: by a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, dated January 30, 1893, £10 a year out of the endowment is assigned for the repairs of the school, & the remainder is applied in providing one or more scholarships of the yearly value of £5 for boys or girls who have passed one or both of the highest standards, tenable at the school; an exhibition or exhibitions of a yearly value of £20, tenable at some place of higher education, & in the payment of teachers &c.; the school is governed by a body of live representative & 3 co-optative governors, & will hold 130 scholars; average attendance, 80.
