Historical Description

CHATBURN is a village and township, with a station on the Manchester and Hellifleld section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, and together with Worston was formed 1838 into a parish from the civil parish of Whalley: it is on the road from Clitheroe to Gisburn in, Yorkshire, 2 miles east-by-north from Clitheroe and 371 from Manchester, in the Clitheroe division of the county, petty sessional division of Blackburn, higher division of Blackburn hundred, Clitheroe union and country court district, rural deanery, of Whalley, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. The village is lighted with gas from the Bold Venture Lime Works, and is supplied with water from the Pendle Hills, the waterworks being the property of Ralph Assheton esq. Christ Church is a stone building in the Romanesque style, erected in 1838 at a cost of £1,632, and entirely rebuilt (with exception of tower) in 1883, from the designs of Mr. F. Robinson, of Derby, at a cost of £3,050, as a memorial to the Rev. Robert Ingram, first incumbent, who died in 1879, and Dixon Robinson esq. of Clitheroe Castle, died 1878, £1,000 being given by Mrs. Robinson, of the Manor House: it now consists of nave with apse, aisles, south porch, transepts and a western tower and spire containing one bell: there are several memorial windows, including three in the apse to the Rev. Robert Ingram, above named: there are sittings for 310 persons, 160 being free. The register dates from the year 1838. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £215, with residence, in the gift of the Hulme trustees, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Robert Daniel Horace Gray M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, and surrogate. A Wesleyan chapel, seating about 400, was erected in 1883. Here is a branch of the Yorkshire Penny Bank, with, at the present time (1904), about 600 depositors and a capital of £32,000, the interest being 2 ¾ per cent.; actuary, Mr. William Waite. The neighbourhood abound in limestone, and the lime works of the Bold Venture Lime Company Limited are on an extensive scale. The Victoria cotton mill here is worked by Messrs. Shuttleworth, Richmond and Co. Limited. Roman coins have been found here, and in 1891 some early English coins were discovered. The Clitheroe Estate Co. Limited are lords of the manor, Col. Arthur Ingram Robinson, of Clitheroe Castle, F. J. Robinson esq. Col. Henry John Robinson, of Blackburn, William Peart Robinson, of Reedley Hall, Burnley and G. Robinson esq. of Overdale, Ralph Assheton esq. of Downham Hall, and Ralph John Aspinal esq. of Standen Hall, Clitheroe, are chief landowners. The soil is clay; the subsoil is limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of Chatburn is 883 acres of land and 13 of water, and of Worston, 1,090 acres of land rateable value, £4,143; the population in 1901 was 867, ie. Chatburn, 772, Worston, 95.

Public Elementary School (mixed & infants), erected in 1850, at a cost of £962, & enlarged in 1880 at a cost of £400, & endowed with £10 yearly from the Huntroyde bequest; it will hold 210 children; average attendance, 130.
