Historical Description
CHIPPING is a parish, township and village, near the Yorkshire border of the county, 10 miles west from Clitheroe, 12 north-north-east from Preston, 8 ½ east from Garstang station on the Lancaster and Preston section of the London and North Western railway, and 5 north from Longridge station on the Preston and Longridge branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire and London and North Western joint railways, in the Darwen division of the county, lower division of Blackburn hundred, Clitheroe Petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Preston, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The river Loud flows through the parish and divides Chipping from Thorley-cum-Wheatley. The church of St. Bartholomew, partly rebuilt in 1520, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Edmund Wilkinson, for nearly 48 years vicar: the west window of the south aisle is in memory of John Watson esq. his wife, son and daughter, and was erected by Elizabeth Ann Platt in 1879; the tower window displays the arms of the sees of York, Manchester and Chester, and those of the Stanley, Addison, Weld, Hoghton, Parkinson and Patten families: at the east end of the south arcade is a brass, dated 1611, to the two wives of Robert Parkinson, of Fayresnape, gentleman: the church was restored in 1873 at a cost of £3,000: an organ was provided in 1876, at a cost of £440: the church has been reseated, and a stone pulpit and reading desk erected, and in 1885 the tower roof was renovated, and other repairs effected for about £70: there are 442 sittings. The registers date from the year 1699 and are in a good state of preservation. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1904 by the Rev. Walter Hudson M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The Catholic church, erected in 1828, and dedicated to St. Mary, is a building of stone in modern Italian style, consisting of sanctuary and a nave without aisles: the organ was brought by the Jesuits from Lulworth Castle to Stonyhurst and thence to this chapel: the interior was redecorated in 1871: there are sittings for 350 persons: the Rev. Isidore John de Gryse is the priest Chair making is carried on to a small extent. Helme’s charity of £40 and Wallbank’s of £16 are distributed on Good Friday and St. Thomas’s day. In 1892 a large tract of land here was purchased by the War Office for a camp and rifle range. The Earl of Derby K.G., G.C.B., P.C. is the principal landowner. There is no lord of the manor for Chipping. Fairs are held here on the 23rd April and the first Wednesday in October for cattle and sheep. The soil is clayey and limestone; subsoil, various; chiefly pasture. The area is 5,627 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £6,449; the population of the township of Chipping in 1901 was 820. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 1,133.
SCHOOLS
Brabin’s Endowed, founded in 1683, by John Brabin, gentleman, & now by a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, dated May 27th, 1878, converted into a public elementary school for boys, girls & infants: the foundation & endowment are administered by a body of 7 governors, of whom four are representative and three co-optative; the governors apply a yearly sum of £50 in providing prizes for good conduct, industry & regularity of attendance: one or more scholarships, of a yearly value of £6 each, tenable in the school by children who have been at least three years at school; & in providing an exhibition or exhibitions of the yearly value of £20, tenable at some place of higher education; providing technical or scientific instruction or industrial training in connection with the school, & providing a yearly sum of not more than £25 towards the support of any school, , being a public elementary school, in the township of Thornley-cum-Wheatley; the residue to be applied for general purposes of the schools of the foundation: the school house was built in 1880 & will hold 200 children: average attendance, 98.
Public Elementary (mixed), Thornley, erected by the Earl of Derby in 1880, at a cost of £2,000, for 76 children; average attendance, 42; this school, in accordance with the provisions of the new scheme, detailed above, receives £25 a year from the governors of Brabin’s trust.
