Historical Description
CLAUGHTON (near Lancaster) is a township, village and parish, on the south bank of the Lune, 7 miles north-east-by-north from Lancaster and about 2 south-west from Hornby station on the Skipton and Lancaster section of the Midland railway, in the Lancaster division of the county, petty sessional division of Hornby, hundred, of Lonsdale (south of the Sands), Lunesdale union, Lancaster county court district, rural deanery of Tunstal, archdeaconry, of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The church of St. Chad, is a small and plain building of stone, consisting, of nave, with a turret on the western gable containing 2 bells, , one of which is dated 1296, with an inscription in Longchardic characters: the church was erected in 1816 upon the site , of the original structure, said to have been built about 1100, and was enlarged, in 1702, and is now (1904) undergoing alterations, principally the addition of a new aisle on the north side: there are 76 sittings. The register dates from the year 1701. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £136, with 14 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Claughton Manor Brick Co. and held since 1899 by the Rev. Edward Harrison B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There is no lord of the manor. The Claughton Manor Brick Co. Limited possess the manorial rights. Claughton Hall, the fine old Elizabethan structure, standing upon an eminence opposite the church and commanding picturesque and extensive views, was held in the 16th century by the Croft family, but is now occupied as a farmhouse by Mr. John Richardson: over, the entrance is an oriel of the Early Tudor period, and the terrace has two towers of later date. The parish contains 1,581 acres, of which 9 are water; rateable value, £2,409; the population of the parish in 1901 was 140.
