Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
COCKERHAM is a village, township and parish, pleasantly seated on an elevated ridge, sloping down to the Cockerham Sands, 5 miles north from Garstang, 6 south from Lancaster and 2 West from Bay Horse station on the Lancaster and Carlisle section of the London and North Western railway, in the Lancaster division of the county, petty sessional division of South Lonsdale, hundred of Lonsdale (south of the Sands). Lancaster union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester portions of the parish were taken in 1858 and 1863 to form the parishes of Ellel, Shireshead and Dolphinholme. The river Cooker has its confluence with the Lune about a mile north-west from Crckerham. The parish church of St. Michael, existing in 1154, and rebuilt (with the exception of the tower) in the year 1814, is an edifice of red stone in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave and a massive embattled western tower containing 6 fine-toned bells, formerly belonging to Cockersand Abbey: the east window is stained: the reredos, of sandstone and marble, is in the Early English style, and there are two brasses on the chancel floor to the Atkinson family: the church affords 440 sittings. The registers date from the year 1595. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £595, with 10 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the three lords of the manor in turn, and held since 1881 by the Ven. Arthur Fred Clarke M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, archdeacon of Lancaster, and surrogate. Crookhey is the seat of Lieut.-Col. Charles Henry Bird M.A., D.L., J.P.; the mansion, begun in 1874 and finished in 1878, is of white sandstone, in the Elizabethan style, from designs by Mr. Alfred Waterhouse R.A,: the pleasure grounds are about 5 acres and the park about 50 acres in extent. Lt.-Col. C. H. Bird, Henry Dawson Greene esq. of Whittington Hall, Kirkby Lonsdale, and B. J. A. Clarke esq. are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The soil is gravelly and sandy; the subsoil is clay. There is a large tract of moss land, partly cultivated, where potatoes are grown, and partly still unreclaimed. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans, with some land in pasture; cheese also is produced in large quantities and of excellent quality. The area is 5,800 acres of land, 9 of water, 179 of tidal water, and 2,242 of foreshore; rateable value, £8,061; the population in 1901 was 677; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 945.
Public Elementary School (mixed & infants), built in 1829, for 150 children; class room for 76 infants added in 1882; average attendance, 91; in 1823 it was endowed by the parish with £12 yearly, £24 being yearly subscribed by the lords of the manor, besides other subscriptions.
A charity of £10 yearly was left by the late John Mason esq. for the education of the poorest children of the parish.
