Historical Description

COPPULL is a township and village on a small stream called the Yarrow, 3 miles south-west from Chorley, 6 north from, Wigan and 199 ¾ from London, with a station on the Wigan and Preston section of the London and North Western railway, and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish August 16th, 1856, from the parish of Standish, in the Chorley division of the county, Leyland hundred, Chorley union and county court district, petty sessional division of Leyland hundred, rural deanery of Leyland, archdeaconry of Blackurn and diocese of Manchester. The church (dedication unknown), rebuilt in 1881, is a structure of brick in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 2 bells: the font, reading desk and pulpit are of Caen stone: the stained east window was presented by Mrs. James Darlington in the year 1861. and there are smaller stained windows: the church has 320 sittings, of which 205 are free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1757, of marriages from 1843 and of burials from 1840. The living is a vicarage, net yearly, value £300, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Standish, and held since 1865 by the Rev. John Graham Hollingworth B.A, of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel here, seating 350 persons, and a Primitive Methodist chapel in the Preston road, with 200 sittings. There are several collieries in this parish. The trustees of the late Viscount Cardwell (d. 1886) are lords, of the manor and principal landowners. The , soil is of a clayey nature; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,282 acres, including 7 of water; rateable value, £25,131; the population in 1901 was 2,940.

Coppull-Moor (mixed), built in 1874 for 177. children; average attendance, 170. An infants' room was added in, 1900 for 120 children; average attendance, 80.
