Historical Description

DEANE was a parish, formed under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” from the ancient parish of Deane it comprised that part of Rumworth township outside the municipal borough of Bolton, but was incorporated into it in 1898: it is on the road from Bolton to St. Helens, about 1 mile north from Rumworth and Daubhill station on the Bolton and Kenyon Junction branch of the London and North-Western railway, and 1 ½ west from Bolton. The church of St. Mary, which stands on a declivity, was built in the year 1250, enlarged in 1831 and restored in 1884, and is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower with four pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, re-hung in 1873: the interior is fitted with old-fashioned oak pews, and has a handsome pulpit of oak: there are several stained windows, one erected in 1897 by James Boardman esq. and a fine timber roof, dated 1570; in the churchyard is a large yew tree: there are sittings for 800 persons. The register dates from the year 1673. The previous registers are at Chester. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 50 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Simeon’s trustees, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Henry Sheridan Patterson, who is a surrogate. The charities are of about £40 yearly value. George Marsh, a Protestant, who gave himself up at Smithills Hall, Halliwell, was an inhabitant of this parish and was martyred in 1555. Lady Beaumont, of Carlton Towers, Yorks, who is lady of the manor, the Earl of Ellesmere and William Wilbrahain Blethyn Hulton esq. D.L., J.P. of Hulton Park, are the chief landowners.

The Bolton and County of Lancaster Certified industrial School, certified Nov. 30, 1863, and June 13, 1870, for the maintenance and education of 200 boys, who are sent by the magistrates under the provisions of the industrial Schools Act, the Elementary Schools Act and the Prevention of Crimes Act. Lads, when of suitable age, are employed on the farm belonging to the institution, or in learning (on the premises) the business of tailoring and shoemaking. The school is under the management of a committee, consisting of twelve gentlemen, of whom three are nominated by the Lancashire County Council, one by the Bolton Education Committee, and the rest, by the subscribers.
