Historical Description

EUXTON is a township and village, with stations on the London and North Western and the Lancashire and Yorkshire railways, 3 miles west from Chorley, 7 south from Preston, 14 ½ north-west from Bolton and 203 ½ from London, and was formed into a parish from the civil parish of Leyland, in the Chorley division of the county, Leyland parish and hundred, Chorley union and county court district, petty sessional division of Leyland hundred, rural deanery of Leyland, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. The river Yarrow bounds the township on the south. The church (name unknown) is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and a turret on the western gable containing one bell; the chancel and gallery were erected in 1837: the font is supposed to be Norman: over the west door is the date 1513; there are piscina and sedilia: the stained Jesse, east window, was presented in March, 1900, by the Rev. H. W. Bretherton M.A, rector of Eccleston, and his family, in memory of the late Mrs. Bretherton, of Runshaw hall, Euxton. The register of baptisms and burials dates, from the year 1774, and of marriages from 1838; they are in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £160, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. R. Cokayne-Frith, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Henry John Greswell Beloe Th. Assoc. King’s College, London. The Catholic church of St. Mary, erected in the years 1864—5, at a cost of about £3,000, from designs by E. W. Pugin esq. is a cruciform building of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, two porches and a small tower with spire, containing one bell, weighing 10 cwt.; the interior is highly ornamented with statuary and painting: the west front has a life-size statue in stone of the Virgin and Child under a canopy: in 1877 a clock was presented by the late W. M. I. Anderton esq.: there is a cemetery and a presbytery attached: there are sittings for 450. The registers of baptisms begin at 1742. There is a Wesleyan chapel seating 100. The charities are of £13 yearly value, £10 being derived from land and £3 from money invested in the funds; these sums are given to the poor in calico and bread. Euxton Hall, a handsome mansion in a park of upwards of 100 acres, is the property of Major William Arthur Alphonsus Joseph Ince Anderton J.P. and is at present occupied by Henry Gellibrand esq. Major Anienton is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The Rev. H. W. Bretherton M.A. rector of Eccleston, the trustees of the late Col. Thomas Richard Crosse, of Shaw Hill (d. 1897), and Thomas Townley Townley-Parker esq. of Cuerden Hall, are also landowners. The soil is of a loamy nature; the subsoil, clay. The crops are cereal. The acreage is 2,932, of which 7 are water; rateable value, £13,214; the population in 1901 was 1,132.
