Historical Description

FARINGTON is a township, village and parish formed 8th Nov. 1843, from the civil parish of Penwortham, and includes the whole of Farington, part of Penwortham, Hutton and Longton; it is on the stream called the Lostock, with a station on the London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire joint railway, 212 ¼ miles from London, 6 ½ from Chorley and 3 ¾ south from Preston, in the Blackpool division of the county, petty sessional division and hundred of Leyland, union and county court district of Preston, rural deanery of Leyland, Blackburn archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester. The church of St. Paul, built in 1839, is an edifice of brick, with stone facings in the Romanesque style, and consists of chancel, north and south porches, nave and a tower at the north-west angle with pinnacles, and containing one bell: there are 500 sittings: in 1889 a stained window was erected to the Rev. Henry Power B.A. vicar 1840—88, by his daughter, and in 1891 the interior of the church was restored and redecorated by subscription. The register dates from the year 1839. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £260, with six acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the incumbent of Penwortham, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Christopher Townson, of St. Aidans. There is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. Here is the extensive cotton spinning manufactory of Messrs. George and R. Dewhurst Limited, at which about 800 hands are employed. “The Moss,” formerly a wide tract of uncultivated land, is now almost wholly under cultivation: numerous oak and other trees have been found here embedded in the peat. Farington House, the seat of John Eccles esq. J.P. is a mansion of brick, pleasantly situated on a gentle eminence and surrounded by pleasure grounds; Faringdon Lodge is the seat of Arthur Walter Carrington esq. Lawrence Rawstorne esq. of Hutton Hall, near Preston, who is lord of the manor, and Messrs. George and R. Dewhurst Limited, are the chief landowners. The Boil is peaty and red loam; the subsoil, stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, potatoes and grass. The acreage is 1,862, of which 18 are water; rateable value, £19,062; the population in 1901 was 1,787 in the ecclesiastical and 2,005 in the civil parish.

PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Endowed Free (mixed), built in 1879 at a cost of £3,000, for 320 children; average attendance, 360; this is a branch of the Penwortham grammar school & has no stated endowment.

Farington New (free), built in 1842, will hold 300 children; average attendance, 275; the school has a library of 400 volumes & a museum suitable for class teaching.
