Historical Description

FORMBY is a parish and village, 8 ½ miles west from Ormskirk by road, 7 south from Southport and 12 north from Liverpool, with a station on the Liverpool, Crosby and Southport section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, and about 3 miles from Woodville station on the Southport and Cheshire Lines Extension railway; it is in the Southport division of the county, hundred of West Derby, union and county court district of Ormskirk, petty sessional division of Southport, rural deanery of North Meols and archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool. The parish is bounded on the west and north-west by the sea. On Formby Point is a residential district, known as Formby-by-the-Sea from the promenade of which a fine view is obtained of the estuary of the Mersey. The village is lighted with gas from works erected in 1880. The church of St. Peter, erected in 1746, is a plain edifice of brick, consisting of chancel, nave, side chapel and a campanile with cupola containing one bell: the chancel and chapel were built in 1873: there are two marble tablets, one to the Rev. Richard Formby LL.D. (d. 1832), and the other to Mr. T. Brown, who bequeathed £500 in trust, the interest to be expended annually in providing bread and coals for the poor: the church affords 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1710. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £173, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Walton, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas Bishop M.A. of St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge. St. Luke’s is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1888, from the chapelry of Formby, in the parish of Walton-on-the-Hill: the church, erected in 1852 by the late Miss Mary Formby, of Formby Hall, as a memorial to her brother, the late Rev. Miles Formby M.A. sometime incumbent of Melling, Lancashire, is a building of stone, consisting of nave, transepts, a chancel, added in 1897, at the cost of Mrs. R. Hesketh-Formby, of Monmouth, vestry, organ chamber and a small turret containing one bell; there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1856. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, including pew rents, with two acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the representatives of the late Richard Formby, and held since 1800 by the Rev. Robert Minnitt M.A. of Trinity College. Cambridge. Holy Trinity is an ecclesiastical parish formed 3rd February, 1893, from the chapelry of Formby, in the parish of Walton-on-the-Hill. The church, opened June 1st, 1890, is of Penmaenmawr stone, and was built at a cost of £2,600: it originally consisted of nave only, but a chancel and transepts were erected in 1896, at a cost of £2,500, and there are now 550 sittings, half of which are free. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, in the gift of five trustees, and held since 1892 by the Rev. John. Brooke Richardson M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Catholic church, dedicated to our Lady of Compassion, and erected in 1864, at a cost of £4.500, is a structure of red brick with corn-stone facings, in the Gothic style of the 13th century, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts and side chapels. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1882, seating 400 persons, and a Wesleyan chapel. The parish library was established and endowed by the late Miss Sophia Earle. The Church of England Victoria Home for Waifs and Strays was opened April 24th, 1897. William Brown, in 1856, left £500, the interest of which is spent in bread and clothing; Richard Marsh, in 1708, left £50, the interest of which is given to 12 poor persons, and there are two small charities; all are distributed yearly. In the village is a stone cross, erected in place of an ancient wooden cross, which once stood here. Formby Hall, the property and residence of John Formby esq. J.P. is an ancient edifice. Charles Joseph Weld-Blundell esq. of Ince Blundell Hall, near Liverpool, is lord of the manor of Ainsdale and three-fourths of Formby. John Formby esq. J.P. is lord of the manor of Raven Meols and one-fourth of Formby. Courts leet are held in the autumn of each year. The principal landowners are Charles J. Weld-Blundell esq. John Formby esq. and Miss Ann Lonsdale Formby, of Sharrocks Hill. The soil is sand subsoil, sand. The chief crops are rye, wheat, potatoes, peas and carrots: asparagus is largely grown; and cookies and shrimps are obtained in large quantities. The area of the civil parish is 5,873 acres, of which 6 are water; and also 1,562 acres of foreshore; rateable value, £34,404; the population in 1901 was 5,642, including 34 patients and 24 officials in Shaftesbury House Private Lunatic Asylum and 163 inmates and 18 officers in St. Anne’s industrial School, Freshfield. The population of the ecclesiastical parishes in 1901 was:-St. Peter (parish church), 3,068; Hoy Trinity, 2,041; St. Luke, 533.
