Historical Description
GOOSNARGH is a village and likewise a parish, including the lower division of Goosnargh, the hamlet of Inglewhite and the township of Whittingham, 7 miles north-north-east from Preston and 3 east from Barton and Broughton station on the London and North Western railway, and 3 east from Grimsargh station on the London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire joint railway from Preston to Longridge, in the Blackpool division of the county, petty sessional division and hundred of Amounderness and union and county court district of Preston, rural deanery of Garstang, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The church, of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Gothic style of the 14th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: in the tower is a clock given by William Shaw esq. and Richard Oliverson esq. in 1846: an organ was presented in 1856 by Robert Oliverson esq. of London, a native of Goosnargh: at the east end of the north aisle is the Middleton chantry, and there is a monument to the Singleton family, with three shields of arms: the stained east window, erected in 1880 by William James Parkinson esq. is a memorial to Mary, his wife: there is also a brass to Mary, daughter of the Rev. Christopher Swanson, d. 1768: the church was restored, roofed and reseated in 1869, at a cost of £2,000, and new roofed and the vestry enlarged in 1895—6, at a cost of about £1,000: there are sittings for 500 persona, of which 499 are free. The parish registers, which do not appear to have been kept at Goosnargh earlier than 1635, are entire till 1639; from that date to 1675 they are very deficient, but since 1675 they are complete and in good preservation. Goosnargh is one of the few parishes in Lancashire which retains by prescriptive right a select vestry, styled the “24 Men of Goosnargh and Whittingham”; the minutes of this vestry are contained in a curious old folio volume, which dates from 1625, and is complete to the present year. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £205, including 66 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1899 by the Rev. James Thomas Kerby M.A. of Durham. The Catholic chapel, called “Hill chapel,” and dedicated to St. Francis, is an edifice of brick and stone, with a turret containing one bell: above the altar is an oil painting of “The Descent from the Cross,” and on each side a handsome carved oak screen. A sum of £65 10s. 6d. is distributed yearly to the poor in food, clothing and money; there is also a charity left by John Parkinson, amounting to £69, to apprentice poor children of Goosnargh and Newsham; and several other small charities belonging to the poor of Whittingham township, amounting in all to about £8. Bushell’s Hospital, founded and endowed by William Bushell M.D. of Preston, in 1735, for the comfort and support of decayed gentlefolk, being inhabitants of Preston, Euxton, Goosnargh, Whittingham, Fulwood and Elston, and Protestants of the Church of England, is a substantial and elegant mansion, enlarged in 1844, and containing a spacious dining hall in which is an original oil painting, by Winstanley, dated 1733, of the only daughter of the founder of the hospital, which by the provisions of his will must not be removed: the inmates are elected by the trustees as vacancies occur: each inmate, besides having a bedroom and the use of a parlour and a library, is clothed and supported at the expense of the trust, and has a quarterly allowance: under a scheme framed by the Charity Commissioners in 1895, the number of inmates is now limited to 24, and there are also a number of pensioners. The hospital is now managed by a body of trustees, six being elective, three representative, and the vicars of Goosnargh and Preston for the time being as ex-officio members; the representative trustees are respectively appointed by the Town Council of Preston, the justices of the peace for the county, and the County Council: the endowment now (1904; amounts to about £3,000 a year, derived from property left by the founder. In the grounds attached to the hospital is an obelisk, erected in memory of Dr. Busheli in 1844. Mr. James. Bryning is governor of the hospital. In 1844, Lord de Tabley was lord of the manor, but the manorial rights have since been sold. The chief landed proprietors in Goosnargh are Thomas Oliverson esq. Townley Rigby Knowles esq. of Fishwiclc hall, Preston, the trustees of the late John Abraham esq. the trustees of Goosnargh Hospital, William P. Park esq. of Whinny Clough, Ashton-on-Ribble, and the trustees of the late George Hargreaves esq. The soil is of every variety; subsoil, a retentive, clay. The land is chiefly in grass, hardly any under tillage. The township comprises 8,329 acres, of which 22 are water; rateable value, £12,548; the population in 1901 was 983; the population of the ecclesiastical parish of Goosnargh with Whittingham in 1901 was 3,732.
Colborne’s Free Schools, rebuilt in 1839 by Richard Oliverson esq. of London, for 200 children, have endowments left in 1655 by John Colborne, of Kirkham, & in 1672 by Thomas Threlfall esq. of Whittingham, now amounting to £60 yearly; under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners this endowment is administered by a body of governors; average attendance, 134.
