The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and Bouth porch, with an embattled 14th century tower at the west end containing a clock and 6 bells: the east window is stained and the pulpit and font are of carved Caen stone and were erected in 1875: there are monuments to the Aspinwall and Ireland families: John Middleton, the celebrated Childe of Hale,” 9 feet 3 inches high, was born in 1578 and died in 1623, and is buried on the south side of the churchyard: the body of the church was built in 1758 and the interior was restored and repewed in 1875, at a cost of £1,200, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1572. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £176, with residence, in the gift of Col. Blaekburne C.B. and held by the Rev. About a mile from the village, and at the back of the Hall grounds, is a decoy pool for catching wild fowl. Hale Hall was built in 1674 by Sir Gilbert Iireland, knighted at Lathom, August 20th, 1617; the Hale estate has descended from John de Ireland, who was contemporary with William the Conqueror, to its present possessor, Col. Robert Ireland Blackborne C.B., D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and sole landowner, and has the right to levy a toll of 4d. on every vessel anchoring off the north shore of this part of the Mersey, here about three miles wide, but the Bridgewater Trust and the Manchester Ship Canal have paid so much a year for several years instead of the Kell toll of 4d. The soil is loam and sand subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,647 acres of land, 7 of water, 233 of tidal water, and 1,351 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,925; and the population in 1901 was 524 in the civil and 1,713 in the ecclesiastical parish.
