Historical Description

HALEWOOD is a large township and in 1844 was formed into a parish from the civil parishes of Chudwall and Huyton, with a station on the Cheshire Lines Railway between Liverpool and Widnes, about 8 miles south-east from Liverpool, and is in the Widnes division of the county. West Derby hundred, Childwall petty sessional division, Prescot union, county court district of St. Helens, rural deanery of Childwall, archdeaconry of Warrington and diocese of Liverpool. The church of St. Nicholas, erected in 1839 and enlarged in 1847, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch, and a tower containing 8 bells, presented by Mrs. French, of Gateacre: all the windows are stained and there are sittings for 570 persons. The register dates from the year 1839. The living was declared a rectory January 24th, 1868, net yearly value £310, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Liverpool, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Francis Bowes Plummer B.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Halebank, built in 1861, and seating 150. The poor have £4 yearly, provided from the Tyldesley, Hayes’ and Lyon charities. The Earl of Derby K.G., G.C.B., P.C. who is lord of the manor, and Col. Robert Ireland Blaekburne C.B. of Hale Hall, are chief landowners, but there are several other small proprietors. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The acreage is 3,861 of land, 12 of water, 89 of tidal water, and 175 of foreshore; rateable value, £29,500. The population of the township in 1881 was 1,857, in 1891, 2,296, and in 1901 was 2,095, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,228.
