Historical Description
HALTON with AUGHTON is a parish and village, with a station on the Skipton and Lancaster section of the Midland railway, 233 ½ miles from London and 2 ½ north from Lancaster, in the Lancaster division of the county, Lonsdale hundred (south of the sands), Lunesdale union, South Lonsdale petty sessional division, Lancaster county court district and in the rural deanery of Amounderness, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The village is beautifully situated on the river Lune, and affords views of the Wyresdale and Littledale Fells. The church of St. Wilfrid, rebuilt (with the exception of the tower) in 1877, and now the fifth erected upon this site, is an edifice of stone consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, dated 1597: in the walls of the south porch were embedded several pieces of stone bearing Saxon characters: these stones now form two Saxon crosses of great interest, one inside and the other outside the church: the font is a memorial to the Rev. George Langshawe B.D. and was erected in 1848 by the Rev. Thomas and Mrs. Mackreth: the organ, built in 1849, was completely restored in 1896: the chancel retains a piscina in the north wall: the stained east window, placed in 1880, and one other are memorials to John Sharp esq. of the Hermitage, and there are others to John Swainson esq. d. 1867, and Thomas Howitt esq. F.R.C.S, of Lancaster: the communion plate was presented by Thomas Withers esq. in 1715: the church, rebuilt at a cost of £3,500, will seat 380 persons: in the churchyard is a mausoleum, belonging to the Bradshaw family, who formerly owned the Hall. The register dates from the year 1592. The living is a rectory, with Aughton annexed, joint net yearly value £379, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1903 by the Rev. John Harold Hastings M.A. of Magdalen. College, Oxford, who is also perpetual curate of Aughton. Here is a Congregational chapel seating about 250 persons. The poor have £11 distributed yearly from R. Sparling Berry’s charity, left in 1837; also 10s. yearly from Thomas Withers’ charity, left about the year 1700, for the poor. Halton Hall, the residence of Edmund Sharpe esq. is an ancient stone mansion, on the banks of the Lune; here is preserved a Roman altar, found in the churchyard, Halton Park, the residence of Samuel James Harris esq. J.P. is the property of the trustees of the late Col. Sir John Underwood Bateman-Champain K.C.M.G., R.E. (d. 1887): the house is a modern building of stone, commanding some extensive views. Carus Lodge, the residence of Henry Davies esq. and the property of the trustees of the Ripley Hospital, is a mansion of stone, erected in 1835 by the late Mr. Alison, of Liverpool, in a small park and surrounded by beautiful scenery. Sheffsrlands, the property of William and Samuel Welch esqrs. and the residence of Thomas Gostav Schwabe Garnett esq. is a good stone-built villa residence, erected in 1857. A silver cup with two ears and elegantly chased, containing upwards of a thousand silver pennies of King Canute’s reign, was found on the Moor in 1797, and is now in the British Museum. The principal landowners are John Lee Booker esq. of Swarthdale house, near Cornforth, the trustees of Sir J. U. Bateman-Champain K.C.M.G., R.E. the trustees of T. P. Cole esq. the trustees of Mrs. Ripley, J. Bradley, the trustees of the late J. Smith esq. and William and Samuel Welch esqrs. The soil is loam; subsoil, gravel. The land is chiefly pasture. The area, with Aughton, is 3,921 acres, of which 102 are water; rateable value, £7,538; the population in 1901 was 890.
In 1900 13 acres of this parish were added, to the municipal borough of Lancaster.
Grammar School, Aughton, founded & endowed by the will of Robert Burton, dated August 20, 1697, & now, by a scheme of the Charity Commissioners framed in 1882, converted into an elementary school; new buildings have been erected at a cost of £400; the endowment amounts to £62 yearly & there are 10 scholars on the register; average attendance, 9.
Public Elementary (mixed), erected in 1893, and supported in part by an endowment of £16 yearly, left by Thomas Withers in 1700, for the education of eight poor children free; it will hold 256 children; average attendance, 149.
