The river Wyre, which is here 500 yards in breadth, was crossed from this place to Poulton by a ferry, called “Shard Ferry” until 1864, when an iron bridge supported on 32 iron pillars, was erected at a cost of about £13,000. The scenery on the banks of the river is very beautiful. The township is supplied with water by the Fylde Water Board. The church of The Blessed Virgin Mary is a small stuccoed building, erected in 1749, and consists of nave, aisles, north porch and a small embattled western tower with four pinnacles and containing one bell: the church was restored in 1878, at a cost of £1,029, and will seat about 200 persons; all sittings are free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1813; marriages, 1838; and burials, 1813. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £175, in the gift of the vicar of Kirkham, and held since 1882 by the Rev. James Henry Bumstead, of St. Aidan s„ who resides at Poulton-le-Fylde. Here is a small Congregational chapel erected in 1871. A bequest of £2 yearly, left by Sir N. Sherbourne, of Stonyhurst, in 1706, is given to the poor. Manorial rights are not exercised. The principal landowners are J. S. Gaskell and Messrs. Robert Lewtas, Benjamin Lewtas and J. E. Renshaw. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The acreage is 1,441 of land, 4 of water, 24 of tidal water and 128 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,536; the population in 1901 was 321.
