Historical Description

Hawkshead is situated in Furness, and this is a portion of the county containing an area of land about 28 miles from north to south, by 13 from east to west, having part of Cumberland for its east boundary. On the north and east it is skirted by Westmoreland, and on the south it is washed by the Irish sea. This district consists of an irregular and romantic mixture of high craggy hills, narrow vales, lakes, rivers, and brooks, and on the Cumberland border, the mountains are wild and lofty. The south extremity, which projects into the sea, is called Lower Furness, and is fronted by the singular and bow-like isle of Walney. Here is no town properly called Furness, but the district contains several villages, and the four market towns of Hawkshead, Cartmel, Dalton, and Ulverstone. To Furness there are passages over the sands at low water from Lancaster to Cartmel, and thence to Ulverstone; but no traveller should attempt to pass them without a guide.

Hawkshead is a small market town, pleasantly situated near the head of the lake of Estwaite, at the northern extremity of the county, about 266 miles from London. It is the principal town in the district called Furness Fells, ami has a weekly market on Monday.

Edwin Sandys. archbishop of York, a native of Hawkshead, founded in 1585 a good Grammar School here, which he endowed with 301. per annum, to which sum the letters patent granted by Queen Elizabeth limited the endowment. The possessions of the school, are, however, at this time worth 1001. per annum.

Hawkshead is distant from Kendal, by the ferry at Windermere (where carriages of all kinds are taken over with the greatest convenience and dispatch) thirteen miles north-west; from Cartmel thirteen miles south; from Ulverstone fifteen miles north; from Broughton thirteen miles south-west; from Keswick twenty miles south, and from Penrith twenty-nine miles south-west. The roads round Hawkshead are all excellent.

Hawkshead church is a handsome ancient structure, with a tower, which forms a pleasing object in a distant view of the town. It was made parochial by the archbishop of York before men tioned, whose father and mother lie buried here.

Over the School House is the following inscription:

"Memorise Reverendi D. D. Edwini Sandys, Ebor

olim Archiepiscopi Scholae hujus Fundatoris.

Daniel Rawlinson civis Londini Graesdalea com'

Lanc’ Oriundus posuit A. D. 1675."

Mr. Rawlinson was a considerable benefactor.

Here is a good Free Grammar School for 100 boys. To the neat Town House, built by subscription, several merchants of London, who had been educated at Hawkshead, were the chief contributors. An old house, near this town, was occupied by some monks as representatives of the abbot of Furness.

The vale in which Hawkshead stands, lies exactly between the celebrated lakes of Windermere and Conistone, and runs as they do, nearly north and south; but as it lies higher than either of them, it is remarkably healthy. The west side of Hawkshead, which rises gently from the lake, has probably a singularity of character scarcely any where to be equalled; being entirely broken from top to bottom, into smooth round-topped hills, which have a remarkable softness of appearance; this peculiarity of form, together with the hedge rows intersecting them, in various directions, and several patches of wood in different positions upon all of them, impress upon that side of the vale a most characteristic effect, and form some of the most delightful sheltered situations for houses that can be well imagined.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HAWKSHEAD is a small town, head of a petty sessional division, a township and extensive parish, 7 miles west from Windermere station, 5 south-west from Ambleside, 13 west from Kendal (by crossing the lake), 16 north from Ulverston and 4 east from Coniston station on the Coniston branch of the Furness railway. The parish, originally in three townships, was about 9 miles in length and 5 ½ wide, comprising within its area the lake of Esthwaite Water, which affords excellent fishing, which, at its greatest dimensions, is about 1 ½ miles long and half a mile broad, is in the North Lonsdale division of the county, Lonsdale hundred (north of the Sands), Ulverston union, county court district and rural deanery of Ambleside, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The scenery is remarkably varied: to the south the hills are of moderate elevation and mostly covered with woods of varied growth: northwards the prospect assumes a grander form, embracing the bold mountain scenery of the Coniston range, Scawfell Pikes, the Langdales, Helvellyn and the mountains above Grasmere, Rydal and Windermere. The town of Hawkshead is in the centre of a delightfully sheltered valley, at the head of Esthwaite Water, and is a place of great antiquity, courts of justice having been held here in the name of the abbots when Furness Abbey was in the height of its power: it was also anciently the capital of the Furness district.

The church of St. Michael, standing on a rocky eminence dominating the vale, is an edifice of the Early Norman period, with additions of the 16th century, and consists of nave, aisles, south porch and a massive embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the absence of any structural chancel is supplied by an arrangement of carved oak screens inclosing a portion of the east end: the piers and arches of the nave, together with the tower, form part of the original church, founded about the time of the Norman conquest: there is an altar tomb with effigies to William and Margaret Sandys, the parents of Archbishop Sandys, c. 1556; and mural tablets to Myles Sandys (1675), Daniel Rawlinson (1679) and Thomas Rawlinson (1687): the stained east window was given in 1894 by Col. Thomas Myles Sandys M.P., D.L. who also restored and enlarged the organ, at a cost of some £500. The church was restored in 1876, at a cost of £3,237, and affords 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1568. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £370, including 31 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since November, 1892, by the Rev. Edward William Oak B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and surrogate. A new vicarage was built in 1900, at a cost of £2,500, of which Col. Sandys contributed £1 500. There is a Friends’ Meeting house at Colthouse, a Baptist chapel at Hawkshead Hill, and a Union chapel in Flag street. The Hawkshead institute, in the Market square, comprises a library, containing about 1,300 volumes, a billiard room, and reading, news, recreation and refreshment rooms. The Town Hall is a small building in the Italian style, erected in 1790, and enlarged in 1887: it will hold some 300 persons, and is licensed for dramatic performances. Fairs are held on October 2. and Raster Monday. The charities distributed yearly amount to £28 2s. left in 1713 and 1798 by Miles Sawrey and John Jackson, and in 1879 by the Rev. William Wilson, the Rev. George Park, and others. Hawkshead Hall, now a farm house, once belonged to the abbots of Furness, who held their manorial courts in the room over the gateway. High House, the residence and property of Henry Swanson Cowper esq. J.P., F.S.A, is a fine stone mansion, built in 1859, and delightfully situated on Hawkshead Hill, which commands extensive views. Keen Ground is the property and residence of J. Canham Cowper esq. J.P. and Esthwaite Lodge, on the banks of the Lake, is the property of Major William Alcock-Beck, of Sawrey. The Duke of Buccleuch K.G., K.T., P.C. Is lord of the manor in Hawkshead township. A manor court is held yearly in November. The principal landowners are David Ainsworth esq. of the Flosh, Cleator, Cornforth, Major William Alcock-Beck, Victor Alexander Ernest Garth Marshall esq. of Coniston Park, W. F. Whittaker esq. H. S. Cowper esq. Col. Thomas Myles Sandys D.L., M.P. of Graybhwaite Hall, Ulverston, J. C. Cowper esq. Mrs. Marshall, of Skelwith Fold, and Mrs. Lane, of Walker Ground. The soil is light; subsoil, stony. The chief crop is grass. The area is 4,423 acres of land and 288 of water; rateable value, £4,294; the population in 1901 was 638. The population of the ecclesiastical parish is 1,094.

Hawkshead Grammar was originally a free grammar school, endowed by Edwin Sandys, Archbishop of York, in 1585, with lands in Yorkshire & Lancashire, the rents of which now amount to £200 yearly: it is now a secondary school: attached to the school are three Thomas Sandys’ scholarships of £10 per annum for boys who pass the elementary school, one entrance scholarship of £20, & one of £30, & a leaving scholarship of £20: the buildings include a residence for the master, with provision for boarders; a new scheme has been sanctioned by the Charity Commissioners, by which the lower school is entirely separated from the grammar school: a gymnasium was erected in 1885 to commemorate the tercentenary of the foundation of the school; there are now (1904) about 15 boys, of whom 5 are boarders; the school is controlled by a body of 11 governors, of whom Major W. Alcock-Beck J.P. is chairman; the Rev. Dr. Walker, the Rev. Dr. Wordsworth, many years master of Trinity College, Cambridge; his brother, William Wordsworth, the poet; the first Lord Abinger, Sir Frederick Pollock, Dr. King & several other eminent men received their education in this school; Rev. Reginald Murray Samson M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, is headmaster.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1863, for 144 children; average attendance, 93; Anthony Hargreaves, master. Infants’, erected in 1873, for 50 children; average attendance, 32.
