Historical Description

HESKETH with BECCONSALL form a parish and scattered village near the river Douglas, at its confluence with the Ribble, 6 ½ miles by rail and 12 miles by road south-west from Preston and 8 miles by rail and 10 by road from Southport, with a station on the West Lancashire railway, opened in 1878, and is in the Chorley division of the county, Leyland hundred and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Ormskirk, rural deanery of Leyland, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester; it was separated from Croston and made a distinct parish by 1 and 2 George IV. cap. ciii. It is supplied with water from the Preston water works. The church, erected in 1750, on the site of an ancient structure, is a plain edifice of brick and consists of chancel and nave and a turret containing one bell: the interior was repaired in 1875, at a cost of £300, and will seat 160 persons: in the churchyard is a monument to Thomas Humphreys esq. one of the founders of the church. The register dates from the year 1745, but for marriages from 1840 only. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £280, in the gift of Sir T. G. Fermor-Hesketh bart. and held since 1864 by the Rev. Richard O’Brien M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin: the rectory, built in 1866, stands in its own grounds of about two acres. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, holding 250. Dr. Layfield’s charity of £5 yearly, arising from a share in the rent of land in Croston, known as “Fould’s estate,” is distributed in cotton cloth. Sir Thomas George Fermor-Hesketh bart. J.P. of Easton Neston, Towoester, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is a black, heavy loam, with a subsoil of clay; moss lands, light; marsh lands, a sandy loam. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes; these are mainly grown on land reclaimed from the estuary of the Ribble and Douglas: the first inclosure was in 1834, when 40 acres were inclosed; in 1861 another inclosure of 700 acres was made, for which Sir Thomas Hesketh paid to the Ribble Navigation Company the sum of £6,000, the cost of carrying out the work being £15,000 f in 1881 and 1882 a further inclosure of 1,100 acres was effected, at a cost of £20,000, defrayed by Sir Thomas Hesketh. The acreage is 3,654 of land, 8 of water, 79 of tidal water and 1,130 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,019; the population in 1901 was 901.
