Historical Description

At the village of Heysham are the ruins of a small ancient building, called St. Patrick’s Chapel. Its architecture is of very early character: and its entrance door-way has a semicircular arch, formed out of one stone, ornamented with fluted mouldings, running round the whole door-way. The building is very small, and seated on a rock. At a short distance from one end are four holes cut in the shape of stone coffins, out of the original rock; close to which is a natural bench or seat. The whole appears to have been formed as an oratory for a catholic priest, to offer up prayers for the souls of some shipwrecked persons who were cast away on this coast, and who were probably from Ireland.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HEYSHAM is a civil parish, in a healthy and retired position on the shores of Morecambe Bay, 5 miles west from Lancaster, 3 south-south-west from Morecambe station and 236 from London, in the Lancaster division of the county, petty sessional division of South Lonsdale, hundred of Lonsdale (south of the Sands), Lancaster union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. It is governed by an Urban District Council of 12 members, formed in 1899, under the provisions of the”Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). The church of St. Peter, standing upon the shoulder of a rock close to the bay, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Gothic style of the 14th century, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an open western bell cot containing 2 bells: the nave occupies the site of an Early Saxon church, traces of winch are visible at the west end, and the chancel arch is Early Norman: the north aisle was added in 1864 by voluntary subscriptions: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. John Royds, late rector, died June 9th, 1885: the west window is also stained, and within the chancel is a mural tablet to the Rev. William Ward, a former rector, ob. 1670: there also remains a massive stone, with a carving of a sword upon it, and some portions of a chalice found in the tomb of an early rector of Heyshim in the chancel, and now built into the wall: there are 350 sittings, of which 300 are free: in the church, and is a carved upright stone, partially in the shape of a cross, bearing the date 1696, and a supposed Saxon doorway, discovered on the building of the north aisle. The registers date from the year 1658, and are in good condition. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £550, with 50 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of John F. Twemlow Royds esq. of Sandbach, Cheshire, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Stirling Cooksley Voules M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. On the hill above the church, erected on the bare rock, are the remains of a small but ancient oratory, dedicated to St. Patrick, 24 feet long and 7 ½ feet broad: it is a fine specimen of Early work, and has a doorway with a semi-circular head, formed of a single stone: there are also several coffln-like excavations in the solid rock. At High Heysham are the remains of an ancient building, which originally belonged to the Stanley family, of Knowsley Hall. Heysham, on account of the salubrity of its air, is resorted to as a place of residence during the summer season. Heypham Hall is now occupied by Archibald W. Malcolm esq. Heysham Lodge is the seat, of George Wright esq. and Heysham House of Miss 33. S. A. Tomlinson. Heysham Tower, situated in beautifully laid-ont grounds, is now the property of the Midland Railway Company, who have converted it into a flrst-class private hotel. At Heysham Harbour two immense breakwaters and a pier for the Midland Railway Co.s' new harbour were constructed in 1900. The excavation of a harbour of 46 acres, and the construction of a pier and two breakwaters, cost £480,000.

The principal landowners are the trustees of the late F. W. Grafton esq. the Rev. Francis Twemlow Boyds M.A. and of the Rev. C. Twemlow Boyds, the trustees of Mrs. Knowlys and Richard Smalley esq. The soil is light loam; subsoil, granite. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and potatoes; there is a good deal of pasture land. The parish and Urban District contains 1,835 acres of land and 1,254 of foreshore; rateable value, £20,991; the population in 1891 was 766, and in 1901, 3,381.

Public Elementary School (mixed); the school will hold 250, average attendance, 200.
