Historical Description

HOOLE is a parish comprising the townships of Much Hoole and Little Hoole, in the Blackpool division of the county, Leyland hundred and petty sessional division, Preston union and county court district, rural deanery of Leyland, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. Much Hoole is a large and scattered village, on the old road between Preston and Liverpool and near the river Douglas, with a station about 1 mile distant on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 8 miles south-west from Preston. Hoole was originally a chapelry in the parish of Croston, but was made a separate parish by Act of Parliament in 1641, and is supplied with water from the Preston Water Works. The church of St. Michael, anciently dedicated to “The Holy Trinity,” is a small and plain structure of brick with stone dressings, erected in the 15th century, and consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, dated 1628, and a western tower with pinnacles, containing one bell: the chancel windows are stained, and on the north side is a window containing shields of arms; and there are various memorial windows; here also is a monument to Jeremiah Horrocks, who first observed the transit of Venus, November 24th, 1839, O.S.; he was for some time curate of Hoole, and died suddenly January 3rd, 1641; Herschell speaks of him as “the pride and boast of British Astronomy,” and there is a tablet in Westminster Abbey to his memory; the font is inscribed “Deo Donum Johan Stones, An. Dom. 1633:” the church was enlarged and beautified in 1859, and a clock placed in the tower as a memorial to Mr. Horrocks: there are 360 sittings. The register dates from the year 1676 and is in a good state of preservation. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £168, with residence, in the gift of Leonard Horner esq. of Troutbeck, Linton, Skipton, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Edmund Neal Dunne B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Wesleyans have a chapel. There are two charities, comprising Walton’s charity of £50, and Leyland’s charity of £1 12s. invested with the Charity Commissioners and yielding £1 9s. 8d. yearly, which sum is distributed early in the new year, viz. £1 in clothing to the poor and 9s. 8d. in books. Lard Liford and R. R. Rothwell esq. of Sharpies Hall, who are lords of the manor, and the Ven. Robert Crompton Fletcher M.A. rector of Tarleton, are chief landowners. The soil is marl; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. The acreage is 1,757 of land, 10 of tidal water and 7 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,727; the population of Much Hoole in 1901 was 624.

PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Much Hoole (mixed), with an endowment of £10 left by Andrew Stones esq. in 1650 & of £500 left in 1882 by Miss Isabella, Baxendale, which is invested with the Charity Commissioners & yields £14 1s. 8d. yearly; the school-house, erected in 1850, contains a library of 600 volumes, many of which were presented by Lord Lilford & the late Marquis de Rothwell; there is also a small museum, containing an interesting collection of birds’ eggs, fossils, minerals &c.; there is also placed here a copy of the inscription to the Rev. Jeremiah Horrocks, taken from the tablet in Westminster Abbey; the school will hold 140 children; average attendance, 115.
