Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
KIRKHAM is a small town and a parish with a junction station on the Preston and Wyre branch of the London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire joint railway, 219 miles from London by rail, 43 north-west from Manchester by rail, 8 ½ west from Preston, 8 south-by-east from Poulton-le-Fylde, 10 south-east from Blackpool and 5 north-east from Lytham, and is the head of a county court district and petty sessional division, in the Blackpool division of the county, hundred of Amounderness, union and rural deanery of Fylde, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The parish is ancient and extensive, embracing no less than eighteen townships. The township was constituted a district under the “Public Health Act, 1848,” and governed by a Local Board, but under the “Local Government Act, 1894,” is now under the control of an Urban District Council. The town and locality is supplied with water from the Grizedale Hills by the Fylde Water Board. The church of St. Michael, entirely rebuilt at different times during the period 182563, is an edifice of Longridge stone, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave, south porch and a fine western tower with pinnacles and spire, containing a clock and 8 bells: the organ was enlarged and revoiced in 1853 at the cost of Arthur Leyland Birley esq. who also presented the stained east window in 1871, and a service of plate was given by Charles Birley esq.: in the church are monumental tablets to the Rev. B. Clegg, a former vicar (1720), Thomas Clifton (1688), the Rev. C. Buck (1717) and others: the church was restored in 1877 at a cost of £822, and has 1,350 sittings, 750 being free: the churchyard contains several tombstones of the Birley and other resident families. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, with Christ Church, Wesham, annexed, joint net yearly value £400, including 44 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Welbury Theodore Mitton M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and surrogate. The Catholic church, at The Willows, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, is half a mile from the town, and opened in 1845, is an edifice of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, after a design by Pugin, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, with clerestory, aisles, south porch, and a western tower with octagonal spire containing 6 bells: the high altar is of Caen stone: the east window and the east and west windows of the aisles are all stained, and there are piscina niches in the chancel and chancel chapels: the south aisle contains several brasses. There is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1818, seating 500 persons, and a Wesleyan chapel. A Savings Bank, in Poulton street, was established in 1844. The manufactures of the town are cotton spinning and weaving, and give employment to a large number of the population. A market was held on Tuesday, but has now become obsolete. There are three annual fairs for cattle, viz. February 4th and 5th, April 28th and 29th, and October 18th and 19th. The charities are very numerous. Henry Langton Birley esq. who is lord of the manor, J. Leyland Birley esq. and Miss Mary Alice Hornby, are the principal landowners. The acreage of the parish is 857 of land and 2 of water; rateable value, £11,688; the population in 1901 was 3,693, including 3 officers and 159 inmates in Fylde workhouse. The population of the ecclesiastical, parish as 5,519.

The area of the Union is 56,799 acres; rateable value for 1904, £822,370; the population in 1901 was 93,697.
The Workhouse, Moor street, is a structure of brick, built in 1844 & enlarged in 1870, to hold 200 inmates.
SCHOOLS
Grammar, School lane, now a secondary school, founded in 1649 by a bequest of Isabella Wildinge, a member of the Birley family: a bequest of Henry Colbourne, dated 1665, was afterwards appropriated to its endowment, additional endowments being acquired by the will of the Rev. James Barker in 1673 & Dr. Grlmbaldson, of St. Dunstan’s in the West, London, in 1725. The endowment, available under the scheme of the Endowed Schools Commissioners, framed in 1881, now (1904) amounts to about £860 annually, of which £100 is for two leaving exhibitions of £50 each, tenable at any public college or university & £60 in 10 entrance scholarships for boys of the elementary schools of the ancient parish of Kirkham. The school is managed by a body of 18 governors, of whom Thomas Fair esq. J.P. is chairman & W. J. Dickson esq. sec. There are now (1904) about 47 scholars, including boarders; Rev. Edward Spry Leverton M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, headmaster; Percy V. Lancelot Smith M.A. &. Sydney Crees, assistant masters.
