Historical Description
LATHOM is a parish, with a station at Hoscar Moss in the parish, on the Manchester and Southport section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, about 3 miles north-east from Ormskirk, and is in the Ormskirk division of the county, hundred of West Derby, petty sessional division, union, county court district and rural deanery of Ormskirk, archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool. The Leeds and Liverpool canal passes through. The ecclesiastical parish was formed March 10, 1866, from Ormskirk. The parish adopted the “Local Government Act, 1858,” Sept. 24, 1872, and was governed by a Local Board, superseded under the “Local Government Act, 1894,” by an Urban District Council. The church of St. James, erected in 1850, is a building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, and western tower with spire containing 3 bells: the chancel has four stained windows: in 1895 the church was restored throughout and greatly improved, and now affords 420 sittings, of which 210 are free: in 1897 a lych gate was erected. The register dates from the year 1850. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £130, including 4 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Ormskirk, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Arthur Hesketh Higson M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The Catholic chapel, dedicated to St. John, was built in 1819, and will seat 270 persons. There are Wesleyan chapels at Hoscar Moss and Moss lane. Charities bequeathed by George Crane in June, 1717, and by Heyrick Halsall in July, 1724, and now amounting to between £60 and £70 yearly, are distributed in bread and clothing. This township confers the title of Earl on the Bootle-Wilbraham family, barons Skelmersdale. Lathom House, the seat of the Right Hon. the Earl of Lathom, is in a park of 428 acres, about 3 miles east of Ormskirk, and was begun by William George Richard, 9th Earl of Derby, who died in 1702; it was completed by Sir Thomas Bootle kt. chancellor to Frederick, Prince of Wales, between the years 1724 and 1734, and is an Italianised structure with a frontage of 156 feet, flanked on either side by offices united to the main building by ionic colonnades. The private domestic chapel of the Earl of Lathom, within the park, is an ancient edifice of atone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, eastern porch and a western turret containing one bell: five of the windows are filled with heraldic stained glass, exhibiting the family alliances: the stained east window is a memorial to Alice, late Countess of Lathom, d. 1897: there are sittings for about 150. Adjoining the chapel are nine almshouses, the inmates of which are appointed by the Earl. Old Lathom House was probably erected by Robert de Lathom, temp. Edward I. and at the time of Henry VII.’s visit there to his stepfather, Thomas, first Earl of Derby, the building stood in all its ancient splendour. King James I. also stopped there on the 16th and 17th of August, 1617, on his way from Edinburgh to London. The sieges which this mansion sustained from the Parliamentary forces in 1644—5 and its gallant defence by Charlotte de la Tremouille, the celebrated Countess of Derby, are well known and famous events in the history of the civil war. After the battle of Nantwich in 1643, the united forces of the Commonwealth under Sir Thomas Fairfax, in compliance with a resolution taken in the parliamentary council at Manchester, marched on Lathom House, where they arrived on the 24th February, 1644, and immediately summoned the countess to surrender on condition that herself, children and servants should be safely removed to Knowsley; these terms being after some negotiations refused and the proposals of the countess being also rejected by Fairfax, the siege began on Tuesday, March 10th, and continued with considerable loss to the besiegers from the vigorous sallies of the Royalists, until the 25th April, when the countess, in answer to a renewed summons to surrender, declared that rather than do so she would fire the mansion and with her family, household and garrison perish in the flames: on the following day the besieged under Captains Chisenhall and Fox made another desperate sally and captured part of the enemy’s ordnance, after which the attacks from without almost entirely ceased: on the 23rd May a third summons reached the intrepid countess, who still refused to yield, and news arriving the same night that Prince Rupert was marching to her relief, Rigby, the parliamentary commander, raised the siege and withdrew to Bolton. During the siege, it is said, the enemy shot at the house about 150 missiles of various kinds, at a cost of 100 barrels of gunpowder: and their loss, according to Captain Halsall, was 500 killed and 140 wounded, the besieged losing only six men: after the siege the countess with her children retired to the isle of Man, but the attack was renewed in the following year by General Egerton with 4,000 men and the garrison, being at length reduced to extremities for want of ammunition and not receiving anticipated reinforcements, surrendered on the 2nd December, 1645, and the house was then dismantled and destroyed, no vestige now remaining. Blythe Hall, the residence of the Hon. Rose Bootle-Wilbraham, is also in this township, about two miles from Ormskirk. The Rt. Hon. the Earl of Lathom (who is lord of the manor), Edward James Stanley esq. M.P., D.L. of Quantook Lodge, Over Stowey, Somerset, and Hugh Ainscough esq. are the principal landed proprietors. The soil is loam; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. A part of the township of Lathom is included in the ecclesiastical parishes of Newburgh and Burscough, which see. The acreage is 8,635 of land, 60 of inland and 1 of tidal water; rateable value, £37,109, including Newburgh. The population in 1901 was 4,361. The area of the ecclesiastical district of St. James is 2,650 acres, and the population in 1901 was 1,045. WESTHEAD is a hamlet in the parish of St. James's, Lathom.
