Historical Description

LOWICK is a township and parish on the river Crake, 5 miles north from Ulverston, 6 from Lakeside, 9 from Coniston, 21 ½ south from Kendal, and 2 ½ north-west from Greenodd station on the Furness railway, in the North Lonsdale division of the county, petty sessional division and hundred of Lonsdale (north, of the Sands), Ulverston union and county court district, deanery of Ulverston, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Luke, erected on the site of the old one in 1885, at a cost of £1,856, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western embattled tower containing 3 bells: the stained east window was given by Colonel Montague in memory of Mrs. Gaskarth; and the west window in memory of the late vicar: the church has 235 sittings. The register dates from the year 1720. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £155, with residence, in the gift of the representatives of the late Col. I, V. H. Montagu, and held since 1904 by the Rev. John Piper. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. Arthur Montagu esq. and Miss C. K. Montagu, of Lowick Hall, who are owners of the manor, the trustees of Thomas Woodburne esq. and some resident yeomen are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are oats, barley and pasturage; stock raising is chiefly carried on. The acreage is 2,271, of which 9 are water; rateable value, £2,328; the population in 1901 was 279; the population of the ecclesiastical parish, St. Luke, was 358.
