Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
LUND is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1840 from the civil parish of Kirkham and comprises the townships of New-ton-with-Scales and Clifton-with-Salwick, 1 mile from Salwick station on the Preston and Wyre section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway and 2 miles east from Kirkham, in the Blackpool division of the county, petty sessional division of Kirkham, union of Fylde, hundred of Amounderness, county court district of Kirkham, rural deanery of Fylde, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The church of St. John the Evangelist, dating from before 1516, but rebuilt in 1824, stands in the township of Clifton, and is a stone building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, added in 1852, nave, south porch and a turreted tower at the west end containing one bell, dated 1684: a stone screen divides the chancel from the nave: the nave was rebuilt and the tower erected in 1873: the stained east window was presented by Mrs. Edmund Birley, in memory of her husband, Edmund Birley esq. of Clifton Hall, and her daughter, the wife of Col. Horatio Dove R.E.; there are also several other memorial windows, including one to the Rev. S. Moore M.A. vicar here 1820—86: the font is supposed to have been converted from a Roman altar: there are 300 sittings, of which 217 are free. The register of births dates from 1841, marriages, 1849, previous to which the entries were made in those of Kirkham. The lving was constituted a vicarage in 1866, net yearly value £230, with residence, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Charles Fullerton Smith M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, and surrogate. The area of the parish is 3,044 acres; the population in 1901 was 642.
SCHOOLS
Blue Coat, Newton, with masters house, founded in 1707 by John Hornbie, a former resident, for the education, partial maintenance & clothing of poor boys & girls belonging to the township. In 1809 the funds were augmented by a legacy of £800 left by Mr. John Boyes, a former scholar, & the charity at the present time produces about £400 yearly; the funds are managed by seven trustees, of whom the vicar is chairman; the greater portion of the school was rebuilt in 1864; 50 children are now (1904) educated & partially maintained. The National school is admitted to this foundation.
Public Elementary (mixed), Clifton, built in 1837 & rebuilt in 1887 by Lady Eleanor Cecily Clifton, for 90 children; average attendance, 47.
