Historical Description

LYDIATE is a township and parish, formed March 28, 1871, from the civil parish of Halsall, and including also part of the township of Downholland, with a station on the Cheshire Lines railway on their Southport extension line, 5 miles south-west from Ormskirk, in the South-Western division of the county, Ormskirk division of the hundred of West Derby, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Ormskirk, rural deanery of Ormskirk, and archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool. The Leeds and Liverpool canal passes through. The church of St Thomas, erected about 1839, is a stone building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of nave, and western, tower with pinnacles, containing one bell: a new font was provided and the church entirely re-decorated in 1899: there are about 280 sittings: a quarter of an acre of land was presented by Miss Bryan Smith in 1886 for a burial ground, and 700 yards of ground have since been added from the vicarage garden. The register dates from the year 1841. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £278, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Halsall, and held since 1895 by the Rev. David James Thomas B.A. of University College, Durham. The Catholic church, dedicated to Our Lady, and erected in 1853, is a stone edifice in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, aisles and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and spire containing one bell: there are stained windows in the chancel and north aisle: a magnificent high altar of marble and stone was erected in 1878 in memory of Mrs. Catharine Lightbound: in the panels of the pulpit are alabaster groups illustrating the martyrdom of St. Catherine of Alexandria, taken from the ancient and now ruined chapel, of which the embattled tower and a portion of the south wall still remain: at the time of the Reformation these carvings were taken to Lydiate Hull, where they remained until their removal here. A presbytery was erected in 1880. The poor have £136 yearly from Goore’s charity derived from 56 acres of land, which is distributed in money at Midsummer and in clothing and money at Christmas.

Lydiate Hall, an ancient timbered mansion, was formerly the seat of the Ireland family, and afterwards of Sir Thomas Anderton, who built the porch: the hall retains its dais, with a canopy of oak and a large mantelpiece of the same material, and is wainscotted; there is also carved panelling in one of the upper rooms, and some curious arrangements to facilitate concealment: it was for some time the residence of the Catholic priest, but is now unoccupied, with the exception of one wing, used as a farmhouse. Charles J. Weld-Blundell esq. of Ince Blundell Hall, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is sandy and loamy; the subsoil is sand and peat. The chief crops are wheat, oats, potatoes and cabbages. The area is 1,973 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £7,193; the population in 1901 was 1,024.
