Historical Description

MAGHULL is a township and parish, formed from the civil parish of Halsall, with a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, between Liverpool and Ormskirk and another (Sefton and Maghull) on the Cheshire Lines Committees railway, and is 7 ½ miles north-east from Liverpool and 5 ½ south-west from Ormskirk, in the Ormskirk division of the county, hundred of West Derby, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Ormskirk, rural deanery of Ormskirk and archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool. The Liverpool and Leeds canal intersects the township. St. Andrew’s church, erected in 1878—80 at a cost of about £8,020, is a building of stone in the Early English style, and occupies a site given by Thomas Whalley esq. of Waterloo, a short distance to the east of the former and still existing church; it consists of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, organ chamber, vestry, north porch and an embattled tower at the west end containing one bell: the stained east window, erected in 1899, is a memorial to the late Robert F. Wood esq. J.P. of Bank house: there are 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1729. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £290, in the gift of the rector of Halsall, and held since 1884 by the Rev. John Francis Hooter M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. St. George’s Catholic chapel was built in 1890. There is also a Wesleyan chapel. A sum of £132, invested in the savings bank, produces an annual income of £3 17s. 6d. which is distributed to the poor on Good Friday. The land is held by different proprietors. The soil is light; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, potatoes and garden produce. The area is 2,086 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £15,141; the population in 1901 was 1,605, including 54, in the Liverpool Parish Workhouse Convalescent Branch.
