Historical Description

MELLING (near Lancaster) is a parish and village on the river Lune, with a station on the Midland and Furness joint railway, 11 miles north-east from Lancaster and 250 from London, in the Lancaster division of the county, petty sessional division of Hornby, hundred of Lonsdale (south of the Sands), union of Lunesdale, county court district of Lancaster, rural deanery of Tunstal, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The ancient parish consists of the townships of Arkholme-with-Cawood, Farleton, Hornby, Melling-with-Wrayton, Roeburndale, Wennington and Wray-with-Botton. The parish church, of St. Wilfrid, erected in the 15th century, on a site sloping towards the west, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave, with clerestory, aisles and a tower at the west end containing 6 bells, recast by Rudhall in 1753: the east window was the bequest of Miss Tatham, and there is a memorial window, erected by Pudsey Dawson esq. of Hornby Castle, to Admiral Tatham: the clock was given by Miss Remington, of Melling: the Morley chapel, dedicated to St. Catharine, is at the east end of the south aisle, and formerly belonged, to the Morley family, of Wennington Hall: it contains some remains of an altar, an aumbry, and has two stained windows: by his will Thomas, 2nd Baron Monteagle K.B. who died in 1560, directed his body to be buried in the parish church of Melling: the church-was restored in 1891 at a cost of £1,100, and affords 300 sittings. The registers date from the year 1625, and include the whole of the ancient parish of Melling, to the date of the parochial division under the Marquis of Blandford's Act of 1856 (19 and 20 Vict. c. 104). The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £360, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. R. Remington M.A. of Royston, Herts, and held since 1855 by the Rev. William, Bent Grenside M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Latham's charity of £7 yearly is given to the poor at Christmas. Col. William Henry Foster D.L. of Hornby Castle, is lord of the manor, lay impropriator and a considerable landowner. Miss Burrow and Thomas Burrow esq. T. F. Fenwick esq. of Burrow Hall, Kirkby Lonsdale, and Messrs. Remington are also landowners. The soil is heavy loam; subsoil, clay. The land is used for grazing. The township of Melling-with-Wrayton includes an area of 1,049 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £5,560; with a population in 1001 of 170.

Public Elementary School (mixed), controlled by the Elementary Education Sub-Committee No. 2; James Lewis, 82 Church st. Lancaster, clerk; the school will hold 75 children; average attendance, 45.
