Wennington History

WENNINGTON is a township in Melling parish, on the river wanning, and has a station on the Skipton and Lancaster section of the Midland railway, the Furness branch of which diverges from this place, and is 11 miles north-east from Lancaster and 248 from London, in the Lancaster division of the county, Hornby petty sessional division, Lunesdale union and county court district of Kirkby Lonsdale. Wennington Hall, the seat of Charles Morley Saunders esq. J.P. is a mansion in the Tudor style, beautifully situated, and commanding toe views of the surrounding country. C. M. Saunders esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The land, being upland, is principally pasture. The acreage is 980, of which 11 are water; rateable value, £1,551; the population in 1901 was 142.

Children attend school at Tatham or Melling.
