Historical Description

PENDLETON (near Clitheroe) is a scattered township and chapelry, consisting of Standen, Standen Hey and part of Sabden, in the parish of Whalley, on the west side of the ridge of Pendle Hill, about 2 miles south-south-east from Clitheroe, and together with Standen and Cold Coates was formed into an ecclesiastical parish by Order in Council, May 6, 1873, out of Whalley parish and the district of St. James, Clitheroe; it is in the Clitheroe division of the county, higher division of the hundred of Blackburn, petty sessional division of Blackburn, union and county court district of Clitheroe, rural deanery of Whalley, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. The church of All Saints, built in 1847 at a cost of £3,000, by Mrs. Blegborough, and consecrated August 8th, 1872, is a small building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a western bell-cote containing one bell, hung in 1893: a south chapel was added in 1893—4 by R. J. Aspinall esq., at a cost of £300, the nave has also been re-seated, and a lectern provided: there are 112 sittings. The register dates from 1872. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £160, in the gift of the vicar of Whalley and two trustees, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Isaac Phillips M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Standen Hall is the seat of Ralph John Aspinall esq. D.L., J.P. The Duke of Buocleuch K.G., K.T. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Edmund Arthur Le Gendre Starkie esq. of Huntroyde, Padiham, and R. J. Aspinall esq. The soil is clay and light loam; the subsoil is rocky. The chief crops are pasutre. The principal portion of the inhabitants of the township of Pendleton is at Sabden. The area of the township is 2,823 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £3,506; the population in 1901 was 1,063 and 184 in the ecclesiastical parish.
