Historical Description

PENNINGTON (near Ulverston) is a parish, 2 miles west from Ulverston station, 1 ½ north from Lindal station on the Furness railway and 4 north-east from Dalton, in the North Lonsdale division of the county, petty sessional division of North Lonsdale, hundred of Lonsdale (north of the Sands), union and county court district of Ulverston, rural deanery of Ulverston, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Michael is a plain edifice of stone, rebuilt by subscription in 1826, at a cost of £600, and consists of nave only and a low embattled western tower containing 2 bells: there is a tablet to the Rev. William Bissell, a former vicar of this parish, dated 1785: the church will seat about 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1617 and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, with 1 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Thomas Edge-Wright, of St. Bees. There is a mission church, seating 250, and chapels for Primitive Methodists and Bible Christians and a church institute at Swarthmoor, where also is the house in which George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends, lived, and the window is shown from which he used to preach. In the village is a Working Men’s institute with reading, recreation and billiard rooms. In this parish are three reservoirs, situated respectively at Pennington, Harlock and Poaka Beck, for the supply of water to Barrow, Ulverston and Dalton: at High Carley is a sanatorium, under the control of the Ulverston Joint Hospital Board. Fells charity, of about £7 yearly, expended in clothing, arises from a sum of £310 realized by the sale, in 1866, of a certain house and land left by a person of this name for a parochial workhouse. On the south-west side of this parish, at Lindal Moor and Carkettle, are extensive iron are mines. Conynger Wood consists of a tumulus or hill crowned with trees; Castle Hill is another earthen mound, designed originally as a fortification. Many curiosities have been discovered in the neighbourhood. Pennington was formerly the seat of the ancient family of that name, now represented by the Penningtons, Barons Muneaster, who resided here before the Conquest and until they removed to Muneaster in 1242. Lord Muneaster as lord of the manor. Mrs. Thomas Park, John Fell esq. Septimus Satterthwaite esq. the trustees of the late G. B. Ashburner esq. Messrs. Harrison, Ainslie and Co. James Park esq. and Lieut-Col. Richard B. Gaisford C.M.G. are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy and marly, and the subsoil gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, corn and turnips, with a large proportion of the land in grass. The area is 2,813 acres of land and 37 of water; rateable value, £16,558; the population in 1901 was 1,610.

Public Elementary (Endowed) School (mixed), erected in 1876, at a cost of about £1,500, on ground given by G. B. Ashburner esq. Elliscales, Dalton, & Mrs. Wilkinson, of Pennington, & since enlarged at a cost of £500: the school is endowed with the interest of £200 left by a lady of the parish & will contain about 400 scholars, including infants; average attendance, 230.
