Historical Description

RAINHILL is a township and parish, with a station on the Liverpool and Manchester branch of the London and North Western railway, 192 ½ miles from London, 9 east from Liverpool, 3 south from St. Helens Junction and 7 ½ west-by-north from Warrington, in the Newton division of the county, West Derby hundred, Prescot union and petty sessional division, St. Helens county court district, rural deanery of Childwall, archdeaconry of Warrington and diocese of Liverpool. The parish was formed from Prescot civil parish by Order in Council, 18 Jan. 1840. The church of St. Anne, built in 1837 by the Rev. James Brierley, enlarged in 1843 and almost entirely rebuilt in 1869 at a cost of £4,000, and further in 1893, at a cost of £500, is an edifice of stone consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and a small western tower with spire containing a clock and one bell: there are two stained windows and 840 sittings, of which 275 are free. The register dates from the year 1839. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of James Brierley esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Joseph Edward Gull M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, erected in 1840 at the cost of the late Bartholomew Bretherton esq. and restored in 1886, is a building in the Classic style, consisting of apsidal chancel, aisles and a western tower containing 6 bells: there are some finely executed paintings and two statues by Benzoni, of Rome: the church will seat 600 persons: in the grounds adjoining the church is the convent of the Sisters of St. Paul. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1858 and seating 300 persons, and a handsome Congregational church, erected in 1891 at a cost of over £10,000, the gift of Miss Ruth Evans, late of Rainhill: the building is of stone in the Gothic style and will seat over 700 persons. The population are employed in the manufacture of files, various kinds of watch-work, nippers and pliers, saw frames, broaches, compasses and tools. There is a large brass foundry and two quarries of fine red sandstone. On the hill stands an ancient stone cross. The numerous villas on the hill command extensive views of Cheshire over the river Mersey. The Hall, a large mansion in an extensive park, is the seat of Frederick A. Stapleton-Bretherton esq. D.L., J.F. The principal landowners are F. A. Stapleton-Bretherton esq. who is lord of the manor, and William Holland Owen esq. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay, gravel and red sandstone. The chief crops are Wheat, barley, turnips and potatoes. The area is 1,653 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £14,683; the population in 1901 was 2,208, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 3,639.
