Historical Description
Rampside, a small village on the southern side of Furness, is occasionally resorted to as a bathing place. The sands abound with roots and remains of trees. —Of the eight little islands on this coast, Walney is the most considerable, though it has often been nearly inundated by the sea. It is about ten miles long and one in breadth, and contains two hamlets, called Bigger and North Scale, and a chapel of ease, under Dalton. A lighthouse was erected at the southern end of the island in 1790, the lamps and reflectors of which revolve on a vertical axle by a piece of clockwork. Another small island, nearly opposite to this, is called the Pile of Foudrey; and here are the remains of an ancient castle, according to Camden, built by an abbot of Furness, in the first year of Edward the Third. At North Scale are several wells of fresh water, which are affected by the flux and reflux of the tides, and the waters rise and fall with the fluctuating ocean.
RAMPSIDE is in the borough and civil parish of Barrow. The village of Rampside is pleasantly seated on the southern shore of the peninsula of Furness and has a station on the Furness Railway, 11 miles south from Ulverston and 4 south-east from Barrow, in the North Lonsdale division of the county, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Barrow-in-Furness, rural deanery of Dalton, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. In December, 1887, the chapelry of Rampside, within the civil parish of Dalton-in-Furness, was formed into the consolidated chapelry of St. Michael, Rampside, and in 1897—8 was constituted a distinct ecclesiastical parish, including Piel island. The church of St. Michael, standing on an eminence nearly a mile from the village, is a building of stone, rough cast, and consists of chancel (added in 1892), nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: there are 270 sittings: a considerable addition to the already existing burying ground was made during the years 1889—90. The separate register dates from 1874 only; entries previous to that, date are included in the Dalton register. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Dalton, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Samuel Atkinson Adams B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Parish Room, erected about 1890, is used on Sundays for the school and at other times for services and public entertainments. The Duke of Buccleuch K.G., K.T. is lord of the manor. R. J. A. Clarke esq. Victor C. W. Cavendish esq. M.P. of Holker Hall, Messrs. Hindson and Tinkler and the Furness Railway Co. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and sand subsoil, chiefly clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area and rateable value are included with that of Barrow. The population of the parish in 1901 was 436.
