Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
RAMSBOTTOM is a populous manufacturing town on the river Irwell, with a station on the Bast Lancashire section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 4 miles north from Bury, 13 ½ north from Manchester, 4 ½ south from Haslingden 8 south-west from Bacup, 8 south from Accrington and 7 north from Bolton-le-Moors, and under the provisions of the” Local Government Act, 1894,” has been formed into a civil parish, and comprises parts of the old townships of Elton, Tottington Higher End, Tottington Lower End and Walmeriley and Shuttleworth: it is in the Heywood division of the county, Salford hundred, Bury petty sessional division, union and county court district, Bury rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester. A Local Board was constituted March 18, 1864, under the Act of 1858, consisting of 12 members; by the Act 46 and 47 Vict, dated 1883, the district was extended to its present area, but under the “Local Government Act, 1894,” the parish is now governed by an Urban District Council. The town is lighted with gas by a company. The ecclesiastical parish was formed June 3, 1844, from Bury civil parish. The church of St. Paul is a stone building in the Early English style, erected in 1850 at a cost of £3,400, and consists of chancel, nave, vestry, north aisle, south porch, organ chamber and a tower with spire containing 8 bells, hung in 1870 and recast in 1900: the organ was the gift of the late W. Grant esq.: memorial windows have been inserted to the late Viscount Palmerston K.G. d. 18 Oct. 1865, W. Grant esq. of Nuttall, J. Heys esq. and others; and there is also a marble monument to the late J. Killer esq. of Irwell Mount (1862): in 1866 an addition to the church, now called the Palmerston aisle, was made at a cost of £985: there are 780 sittings. The register dates from the year 1847. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Manchester alternately, and held since 1893 by the Rev. John Jenkins Lewis M.A. of Keble College, Oxford, and surrogate. St. Andrew’s is a consolidated chapelry, formed February 15, 1876, out of Ramsbottom and Shuttleworth parishes; the church, built in 1832—34 by the late William Grant esq. and transferred to the Church of England and consecrated in 1875, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of nave and a lofty tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 4 bells: the east window is stained and there are several monuments to the Grant family, and 350 sittings. The register dates from 1875. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £233, with residence, in the gift of John Grant Lawson esq. M.P. and held since 1875 by the Rev. Henry William Jones, of St. Aidans. The parsonage was built in 1883 at a cost of £1,700. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Joseph, and erected in 1879 at a cost of £2,500, is a building in the Early English style. The Presbyterian church of St. Andrew (Dundee), erected in 1873 at a cost of about £8,000, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, organ chamber and a tower with spire 150 feet in height: there are 650 sittings: attached is a Session house. The Presbyterian church, in Ramsbottom, dates from 1662, and is one of the oldest in England. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1851, has 500 sittings. Park Congregational chapel, formed in 1798, has 450 sittings. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1873, is of stone in the Italian style, and has sittings for 700 persons; the cost, including school rooms, was about £4,600. Stubbins Congregational church, erected in 1865, at a cost of £8,000, is a building in the Gothic style, with a tower and spire 120 feet in height: a stained window has been presented by Mr. Porritt: there are 750 sittings. The Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1889, at a cost of £3,500, will seat about 550. The cemetery at Hazelhurst, in the parish of Holcombe, covers 8 acres, and was laid out at a cost of £7,000: it is under the control of a burial board of 9 members. An annual fair is held here on the first Monday after the 27th August. There are iron and brass foundries, machine factories and extensive calico printing, bleaching, spinning and manufacturing establishments. There is a Conservative Association and a Liberal Club, both of which have rooms for billiards, chess and draughts and reading rooms; an industrial and Provident Society, with reading, rooms, in Central street, and an Odd Fellows’ Hall, erected in 1849 at a cost of £900. The Aitken Memorial and Jubilee Cottage Hospital, in Nuttall lane, presented to the town by Mrs. Aitken, of Holcombe Hall, in 1898, and formally opened by Lord James of Hereford, April 19, 1900, is of red brick with stone dressings, and contains 9 beds. The Duke of Buccleuch K.G., K.T. is lord of the manor, and John Grant Lawson esq. M.P. of Knavesmire, Lodge, York, is chief landowner of Ramsbottom. Mr. J. H. Proctor, of Morecambe, is greave of the manor: courts leet are held in April and October. The area of the civil parish and Urban District is 6,348 acres of land and 76 of water; rateable value, £68,262; the population in 1901 was 15,920.
The population of the Urban District wards in 1901 was:-Central, 4,973; Rast, 3,746; North, 2,849; West 4,352. The population of the ecclesiastical parishes in 1901 was:-St. Andrew 1,198 and St. Paul 3,775.
TOTTINGTON HIGHER END, formerly a township in Bury civil parish, has, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” been divided between the newly constituted parishes of Ramsbottom, Haslingden and Rawtenstall.

Grant esq. & further enlarged in 1880; the schools now hold unitedly 466 children; average attendance, 393.
