Historical Description

RUFFORD is a township, parish and village on the high road from Preston to Liverpool, with a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 12 ½ miles south-west from Freston and 5 north-east from Ormskirk, in the Chorley division of the county, hundred of Leyland, union and county court district of Ormskirk, Leyland hundred petty sessional division, rural deanery of Leyland, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. The river Douglas and a branch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal pass through the township. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1869 on the site of the former church, is a structure of red brick in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel with aisle, clerestoried nave, organ chamber, vestry, aisles, western porch and a small tower with spire at the north-west angle, containing a clock and one bell: there is a mural monument of white marble by Flaxman, to Sophia Hesketh, the wife of Sir Thomas Dalrymple Hesketh bart. d. 1817, and a full-length recumbent figure in marble, by Noble, placed here at a cost of 1,000 guineas, to Sir Thomas George Fermor-Hesketh bart. d. 20 August, 1872: a slab with the figures of a knight in full armour and his lady, formerly in the wall of the old church, is now laid on the floor of the south aisle: there are seven stained memorial windows to the Hesketh family and others erected by the late and present rectors and by Mrs. Caunce: the very beautiful font, was presented in the year 1875, by the Freemasons of the province as a memorial to Sir Thomas George Fermor-Hesketh bart., M.P. Provincial Grand Master of the Freemasons of Lancashire: Roger Dodsworth, the antiquary ob. August, 1654, was interred in the church there are sittings for 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1670. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £430, with 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Edmund Arthur Le Gendre Starkie esq. and held since 1868 by the Rev. James Frederick Hogg-Goggin, of St. Aidan’s, J.P, for Lancashire and chaplain to the Duchy of Lancaster. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Rufford Hall, the properly of Sir Thomas George Fermor-Hesketh bart. J.P. but now, (1904), unoccupied, is a plain brick mansion, situated in a park of about 400 acres, adjoining the village. A. fair is held on the 13th May annually for cattle. Sir T. G. Fermor-Hesketh bart. of Easton Neston, Towcester, is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is sandy, loamy and mossy; subsoil, sand.

The chief crops are wheat, oats, rye and potatoes. The acreage is 3,105 of land, 15 of water and 2 of tidal water; rateable value, £8,044; the population in 1901 was 782.
