Historical Description

SEFTON (or Sephton) is a township and parish, bounded on the west by the Irish sea and the mouth of the river Mersey, with a station on the Southport and Cheshire Lines Extension railway, 6 miles north from Liverpool, in the Ormskirk division of the county, hundred and union of West Derby, Kirkdale petty sessional division and Liverpool county court district, rural deanery of Bootle, archdeaconry and diocese of Liverpool; the river Alt flows through this parish. The parish church of St. Helen, an edifice of stone, was mainly built in the reign of Henry VIII. by Anthony Molyneux, and comprises chancel with chapels, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and a fine western tower with four pinnacles and spire and containing a clock and 6 balls: the tower and north-east chapel date from the 13th century, but a few indications remain of an earlier building; the rest of the church is Late Perpendicular. The chancel and chapels north and south of the chancel, known as the Molyneux and Blundell chapels, contain various monuments. On the south side of the chancel floor is a brass with effigies of Sir William Molyneux (who captured two standards at Flodden Field), and of his two wives, Jane (Rugge) and Elizh, (Clifton); he died in 1548. On an altar tomb adjoining are the brasses of Sir Richard Molyneux, his son and his two wives Eleanor (Radcliffe) and Eleanor (Maghull), together with their family of eight girls and five boys. In the floor of the south aisle is a fine brass to Margaret Bulkeley, bearing a Latin inscription: she was a daughter of Richard Molyneux and wife first of John Dutton, and afterwards of William Bulkeley: she died Feb. 21, 1528. The north chapel contains effigies of two knights and also an altar tomb covered with an alabaster slab, to Joan, first wife of Sir Richard Molyneux: the stained east window was erected in 1876 by Richard, Marquess de Rothwell of the kingdom of Italy, in memory of his uncle, the Rev. R. R. Rothwell M.A. late rector: there is one inserted by B. R. Rothwell esq. in memory of his uncle, the marquess, and others to the families of Gallagher and Birchall: the interior of the tower was restored by Mr. Rothwell and Mrs. Birchall, in 1893, in memory of Mrs. S. Rothwell: the Molyneux chapel retains a piscina: the nave seats are of antique oak with various designs and possess great interest: an oak screen divides the nave and chancel, which contains some sedilia and a credence table and an aumbry: a fine organ was erected in 1894 in the south chapel, and its richly carved oak case was the gift of the late Earl of Sefton. John Sadler, one of the inventors of a method of transferring printed patterns to earthenware, was buried in the churchyard in 1789. The register of baptisms dates from 1597; marriages and burials from 1600; these are in good condition. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £1,200, an the gift of the trustees of the late Marquess de Rothwell, and held since 1890 by the Rev. George William Wall M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, and surrogate. The Earl of Sefton is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil varies considerably; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, rye and potatoes. The township contains 1,232 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £5,135; and had a population in 1901 of 343; the population of the ecclesiastical parish of St. Helen’s, Sefton, in 1901 was 1,877.
