Historical Description
Shaw is a large village in Crompton parish, watered by the Beal, and extends for a considerable distance along the road from Oldham to Rochdale, whence it is distant 3 ½ miles, with a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 2 ½ miles north-east from Oldham; it was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1835. Many of the houses, are of stone, and the streets are well paved, and the village is lighted with gas and supplied with water by the Oldham Corporation. Shaw ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1835, The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1870 to replace the former church built in 1800, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, , aisles, north and south porches and a central, embattled tower containing one bell: there are a number of memorial windows, including the east window, presented by Mrs. Cocker, of New Bank, in, 1884, in memory of her husband and son: an organ was provided in 1887, at a cost of about £1,000, and there is a chancel screen of bent iron work and brass: during the period 1875—87 the church was restored at a cost of £2,390. and affords 750 pittings. The registers date from the year 1704. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £380, with 50 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the rector of Prestwich and held since 1902 by the Rev. James Wilkinson Pinniger M.A of Wadham College, Oxford. The Catholic church at Shaw Edge, dedicate to St. Joseph, was built in 1874, and rebuilt in 1896, at a cost of £2,700. There are also Primitive Methodist-Wesleyan, Free Methodist and Congregationel chapels. The Town Hall, in the High street, was erected in 1894, at a cost of £4,500, and is an edifice of red Ruabon bricks with stone dressings, from designs by. Mr. Harold Cheetham, architect, of Oldham. There are also Public Baths. The Oddfellows’ Social institute in Farrar street, erected at a cost of £4,000, and opened in 1896, is of red brick with stone dressings. The principal landowners are James Henry Lees-Milne esq. J.P. Capt. Abram Crompton J.P. and Messrs. Clegg. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 377 acres; the population in 1901 was 4,642.
