Historical Description
SHUTTLEWORTH is an extensive and populous village on the high road from Rawtenstall to Bury and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish 26th August, 1815, from the parish of Bury, comprising the whole of Shuttleworth and about half of Walmersley township. Under the provisions, of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” that portion of the township in Bury municipal borough has been added to that civil parish and the remainder forms a civil parish known as Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth; the latter village is about 1 mile east from Ramsbottom and Stubbins stations, both on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 4 north from Bury and 4 south from Haslingden, in the Heywood division of the county, hundred of Salford, Bury petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Bury and archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester. The village is nearly a mile in length and is bounded on the east by a chain of hills. The river Irwell flows parallel to the railway. The church of St. John-in-the-Wilderness, erected in 1847 at a cost of about £2,000, raised by subscription and consecrated in February, 1848, is a small edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a small eastern bell turret containing one bell: the church will seat 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1848. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £160, including one acre of glebe, in the gift of the Crown and bishop alternately, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Edwin Dyson, of St. Bees. There is a small Baptist Chapel in Spring street. The Mechanics’ institute, erected in 1853, has a library containing about 800 volumes, and reading and billiard rooms: there are now (1904) 104 members. Stone quarries, cotton, woollen and bleach works give employment to the principal portion of the inhabitants. The reservoir here, constructed in 1836, gives abundant supplies of water collected from the district around Whittle Hill, Facit and Scout for the use of the mills and factories: water for domestic purposes is supplied by the Bury Corporation Water Works. Whittle Pike, 1 ½ miles south-east, is 1,614 feet above the level of the sea. The Earl of Derby K.G., G.C.B. P.C. owns nearly all the land. The soil is heavy; the subsoil, rocky. The land is chiefly pasture. The area of Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth parish is 3,098 acres of lana and 41 of water; rateable value, £3,686; the population in 1901 was 5,711 and of Shuttleworth ecclesiastical parish, 3,758.
