Historical Description
SINGLETON (GREAT and LITTLE) constitute a township and in 1851 were formed into a parish from that of Kirkham, and have a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, about one mile from the village, which is 3 miles south-east from Poulton station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire and London and North Western joint railways, 6 north from Kirkham, 6 east from Blackpool, 15 north-west from Preston, in the Blackpool division of the county, petty sessional division of Kirkham, hundred of Amounderness, union of Fylde, Blackpool county court district, Fylde rural deanery, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The river Wyre passes the northern portion of this district, and the scenery on its banks is very picturesque. The township is supplied with water by the Fylde Water Board. The church of St. Ann, built in 1861 principally at the cost of the late T. Miller esq. occupies the site of the previous church erected in 1808 and pulled down in 1859, and is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and a tower on the north side with a lofty spire, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the lych gate of carved oak was erected in 1879 by T. H. Miller esq.: a brass eagle lectern was presented in 1872 and the organ, costing £300, in 1876, both by the late W. F. Miller esq.: in the chancel is an antique chair of black oak, bearing the inscription “John Milton, 1671, Paradise Lost, and Paradise Regained:” the east window and others are stained: the stained west window was erected by the widow and children of H. Miller esq. in 1859: there are also memorials in brass and marble to Thomas Miller, placed by his children, and two other memorial windows to the late F. W. Byrne and James Jack, of Liverpool: the church will seat 280 persons. The register dates from the year 1842. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value from 80 acres of glebe, £200, with residence, in the gift of T. H. Miller esq. and held since 1843 by the Rev. Leonard Charles Wood B.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. Singleton Park is the residence of Thomas Horrocks Miller esq. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. Here is a fire engine station and volunteer fire brigade, established in 1882 by T. H. Miller esq. and consisting of a captain and 14 men with one manual engine. The soil is clayey; subsoil, marly. The crops are oats, potatoes and turnips; the land is chiefly applied to pasture. The area is 2,713 acres of land, 17 of water, 35 of tidal water and 110 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,966; the population in 1901 was 373; ecclesiastical, 481.
